Walked onto the site turned on the F22 and started swinging. This was in my first hole. I don't know what it is yet but I'm pretty sure it's old, silver and hand engraved. I'm sure someone can tell me what it is pretty quick. I can't complain about my silver coin drought with finds like this one though

EDIT: This has been identified. It's called a Pomander and here is a link to more info and a similar piece

Amazing !!!
Never seen anything like it.. cool to think the ladies of society would use something so dainty and pretty to cover their funk.

It was also believed at the time that foul odors carried sickness and objects such as these served a dual purpose as both a personal deodorant and a air cleaner

Obvious Banner! To me these are the rare and unique items that should be displayed up top. Killer find

Thanks. I've been working this site since spring. Started out thinking it would be a great place for clad but knew it was very near to a lot of history. Sure enough I've gotten plenty of clad but then one day I dug a small flat button near where I had found two silver Rosie's. Very encouraging to say the least. My next visit I began to work a nearby area and out came a great seal button. I knew then this was going to be a great site. Got my first large cent there soon after. I have since dug over a dozen flat buttons, 3 more Large cents and two KG coppers as well as numerous other old relics. I have only found seven silvers here the earliest being 1909. You name it and there is a good chance I have dug it here. An old 19th or 18th century silver coin is nearly the only thing that has eluded me here. I had a feeling one would be here, little did I know I would find something that would surpass all expectations. Needless to say, this find has firmly cemented me in this hobby for many years to come. Thanks again

Marijuana pipe pendant ?

The bottom section does look a little black on the inside. LOL. Each section is sealed though

Really neat find and silver to boot. We all just learned something new. Gonna be adding one of those to my bucket list.

I think it's a pomander for sure also know as a vinaigrette. I would say 1700's. If you search some of the German silver ones it looks similar.

My guess is that it is older than you think, and that it may be one of those doohickies that societys elite tied to their clothing. Filled with scented material to mask body odour. As I said, just a guess. But a rockin' cool find whatever it is !

For me, one question still remains...how is this not up top yet???????

Thanks and good luck. I think you'll have a better chance finding flowing hair or draped bust silver

I think you need a few more Banner votes to get this extremely rare and beautiful piece of history up top. I have cast my vote early on...hopefully some more will cast their vote now that we have a proper ID and a Colonial time frame on this item.

real nice find

My first thought was for Absinthe...
Compartments held two cubes of sugar...
Bottom was "strainer"...
? ? ?
But... heh

This piece was used for prep/ingestion of something IMO. but ? ? ?

You did see the link at the top of this thread? In my opinion the mystery was solved a week ago
