This early site which has been one of the first settlements near Geneseo NY was founded in 1792. In that year there were several houses built in this early colonial town, and there lived a small colony of Germans. This colony soon left, and the entire village disappeared. But the area was not deserted , up until the 1860's a few of the settlers remained.

Now with all the early Pioneer cabins long gone and development starting to take over. :( This Relic rich site will soon be dust in the wind and taken over by modern day innovations. Industry has covered a large part of were this old town once stood and a small part is still undisturbed . This was nice because after researching this place and finally getting permission to hunt it, the Coins and Relics that we did find, were those kind of keepers that us Relic hunters want to find!

It started with me telling a friend of mine who I detect with about this site and when telling him of this area , he told me he had permission to hunt it. :) :) I was happy to here that indeed, so off we went and the finds that I recovered that day were some of the best that I have found Detecting at that time.....

Draped Bust Large Cents - 1805 ,1802
George III NY Copper - 1787
Coronet Large cents (3) 1848,1835, N/date
Connecticut Copper -Silver Plated, N/date 1700's ?
U.S. 2 - Cent Piece - 1864

The other Relics were a Silver plated Button with a (Star in the middle) With the markings W& R. S. on the reverse.

The Clay Pipe stem has "Glasgow" on one side . On the other side has "McDougall" . Interesting!!!

The other Buttons are early colonial with a number of different markings on the reverse. The pewter one has none.

Along the Genesee River you will find your share of Indian artifacts . This region has a rich history dating back thousands of years . The small arrow point was found when I was digging one of the coins I found at this site!

What is nice about Relic hunting and the finds that come out of sites like this one is that some items may tell a little about the history of the place your hunting . Months ago I posted in Best finds an 1805 Draped Bust half dime , this was the only U.S. Silver coin to come out of this site . The coins are fairly deep here but with only 15600 minted , I was very excited to have found my oldest Silver coin to date. Spanish reales have been found here also. Well I hope you enjoy this story!!!So Keep on Digging! ;)

Holy smokes !!!! You cleaned house ,Congrats. You got alot of history there. :)

nice finds seeker, those large cents are cool. I so wanna get out and hunt with you.

I have researched two vacated settlements in my general area that began prior to 1776 and ended prior to 1895. Spanish silver, draped, capped, and seated coins are swimming through my head when just thinking about the wide range of possibilities. We know they are there, but it will take extreme patience to find them.

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! Will have more info on this site in the near future...........Thanks again John

Soon I will have more pics of the latest finds from this Geneseo Site. the coins, buttons and Relics have been found with the permission of the land owner. One Forum member has asked me if getting permission is easy to get. I have told him that getting permission is a piece of cake....The toughest part is getting up the nerve to walk up to a strangers house and ask! All they can say is no, but 9 out of 10 times they will say yes and be very interested in what you find! Thanks again for the nice comments!

I graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 1987. At that time never even thought about metal detecting. In retropsect if I had the MD hobby while I was in school, maybe I would have done a little less drinking and carousing.....my grades might have been better and I might have been better off financially. Now I doubt if i'll ever get back there to detect. That would be a great area to MD.
Ever done any of the ghost towns near Letchworth?

Well now Seeker everytime I pull up your thread I'm wondering if you matched Mel Fisher's find yet. I tell you I expect this out of you.

Man, if you didn't live so far away I'd pay you to give me THing lessons.

Truly awesome finds!
