Hi all .On the weekend i had a extra day off and got invited to go digging with some bottle diggers. These guys dive into the muddy rivers on the other side of the border in Southern New South Wales, nice drive about 500 miles round trip for the day.Glad i wasn,t paying the gas bill lol BUt i had to sit for about 4 hours and watch the noisy air-pump.Well after lunch we went up to an old police station and i dug threw the trash pit.The trash pit has been cleared by the bottle diggers some time before.there only interest is bottles so i had a good chance of finding a few other relics. They thought it was funny at the all the broken leg irons and hand cuffs i found but that changed when in the bottom of the pit i pulled this 1880 NSW police helmet plate out.Didn,t get a single coin but i also got a few keeper bottles from the river, given to me.Didn,t get home until 1am and had work this morning at 5 am .so i have had much chance to clean anything.it took me nearly 2 years to get an invite with pro-bottle divers as trust is a big thing and they don,t like to share.fearful of site jumpers.Thats the way the ozzie bottle diggers are and i was just grateful to get an invite. Also cost me that Rare BUFS sandhurst bottle as well.
Yes hmmm that was costly but worth it.

tinpan PS getting closer to Harry Morrant country lol

Thanks for the replies, history is well recorded here since day one, i don,t chase the best sites just the ones that most hunters would consider worth less and i think because there was no rubbish pick-up till well into the 1920's most old dwellings the locals dumped their trash into back yard pits and old shafts and in places where you could hide it.This might be hard to believe but just walking around the block i find 150 year old shards.Waterways old dams and theres so much disused public land that was used for mining or other purposes .At times seems endless but i have had my share of go home empty handed.

good luck to you northers as spring is nearly here.

Nice relics and one can only wonder what bad guys had those on in years gone by!

Are those handcuffs and leg irons? Hard to tell the size. Some look small enough to be thumb cuffs...depending on their actual size. Monty

Now they are very cool finds! I love the badge that is really neat. Nice going.

The local Australian natives have smaller wrists and the often natives didn,t agree with colonial law .Rounded up like animals and chained up, which included women and children. Most were site to reserves or missions in out of the way places. Those who resisted were shot on site.Colonial police were at times not much better than common murderers except they had the right as they ware the CROWN.Most police at the time were poorly paid and drank a lot. A large % of them were ex-crims deported to Australia from the UK.Outlaws were often tracked down and shoot in head a closed range while they slept.Any others were hung. The Law was harsh at this time.Top load Henrey Martini Carbine was the issue rifle at this time.

:wav: Impressive to say the least Tinpan. You have some good friends to take you along like that. I always enjoy your finds but this time it's a show stopper. Sounds like your country lawmen were alot like ours, who ever had the badge made up the law on the spot! Oh well things worked out in the end. HH
