Hello Forum,

I found this in a farm field that is very old. Aside from having a hole drilled into it, I really think this could be a colonial copper. A magnet will not stick to it, and it is approximately 34 mm in diameter. Does anyone recognize anything on it? Thanks for looking!

The beveled edge makes me think it is not a coin. Could be a button with the loop removed by the hole. Just a guess.

I found a couple on another metal detecting forum that looked like mine, and even the hole was drilled slightly off center. They mentioned that it was common that farmers would nail an old copper coin or token to a house, barn, or fence post to bring good luck for a plentiful harvest. I really don’t know for sure what this is though.

The patina in the drilling doesn't match the patina of the coin. Also, the hole looks like it was drilled with a modern type steel drill bit as opposed to being punched with a sharp nail. I think old "coin" with newer drilling. Gary

As for the patina, I’ve been working on this coin (washed, soaked, Buffed). I wanted to obtain even one clue as to what it was. I figured not much to loose. The drilling does look modern, so the drilling I don’t suspect is old. I’ve uploaded a couple of photos that might have more patina.

I found some similar in a CW cavalry Camp, they would make their own Rowels for the spurs and did find a 1853 Crystal Palace token with hole drilled in center, here is a pictures of some i have found. Found in Wilson County, NC.
