I have to cover my Parakeets cage with blue tarps when it gets cold & windy. They do fine.

BTW nice collection

Parakeets
These are not Parrots and do not talk, I don't think... I had one when I was a kid, it didn't talk. Back then I was asking the same question and basically got a no answer..

Hi. They are parrots native to my country Australia. They can be easily taught to talk by repeating the same words. In our outback they gather in flocks numbering hundreds to thousands drinking at waterholes.
Males are the easiest to teach to talk, perhaps you had a shy female or didn't persist enough.
Erroneously they say that the name Budgie is obscure and the origin not known.
That is false. I had a great Aboriginal friend and the name Budgie came from his peoples language. They were known as the little friendly bird. Often my Aboriginal friend would call me budge, friend.

I've seen video's of them talking. Mine don't as I don't spend time with them & they are all together in a large aviary. They do have quite the range of sounds and it's very enjoyable to hear them all chirping and peeping together. There are wild flocks of them here in Florida too. About 10 miles north of me is Patrick Spaceforce Base and there are hundreds that live on the base as it has lots of wild land surrounding it.

Hi. I never knew you had them there wild too. Beautiful little birds. We had one when I was a teen living at home. I remember when we'd let it out inside it would have a ball checking everything out. Especially Xmas time and the tree! It was my mothers and im sure it said a couple of words she taught it but I cant recall what as I was rarely home those days. I do remember she taught it to make a sort of kissing sound which when you did it the bird would do it back. Was a funny little thing.

so how cold is cold in Florida? with wild ones in the area, I have to wonder if your birds really need the extra cover . I remember seeing the trees full of those once while visiting Fla.

The Parrakeets in Florida are not native but the result of pets getting loose or being released. They start multiplying and the conditions are suitable for them. Florida has a lot of different Parrots that have established flocks all over the state. We have Blue Headed Conures around here and they come to our feeders. Here is a picture of a couple of them.

They will some, just not as much as a parrot. My friend had one named Tater when we were growing up and he a say “pretty bird, pretty tater bird” and whistle.

They would probably be ok. The wild ones seem to make out fine. I usually cover them when it gets in the low 40's and is windy. I know being in the wind when it's cold makes it colder. 40's in Florida is cold!
