After the decline of Roman rule late in the forth century England plunged into the Dark Ages more commonly known as Anglo Saxon times. The Coin on the left of the picture is a Anglo Saxon Sceatta(penny) of Eadberht Saxon King of Northumbria 737-758 Fantastic Animal right, surrounded by four pellet-in-ring motifs. The Coin on the right of the picture is a clipped Siliqua probably of the Emperor Vallens (not quite certain) reverse Roma enthroned holding spear, notice how it has been clipped to the same size as the Sceatta this was so it could be used in circulation with the Saxon Coins of the Times :-*

Hi...the soil is very sandy but also heavy in Iron, the coins were totally brown in colour and have taken a week to clean them this far, nearly all the Silver Coins that have come from this part of the field are the same colour.

Re: Coins from the Dark Ages

Hello Tyre Kicker, Got to admit dark age coins are one of my favorite finds. I've lost count of the copper stycas I've found over the the year. Only had 4 silver sceats though 2 of which were Eadberht fantastic animal types ( got their images on a disc somewhere). This is the last sceat I found its Eanred.

About £125.

On the clipping theory, I too thought it was so they could circ with the sceats. However, the Fitwilliam said they have many late Roman Hoards with them turning up in big numbers.

Re: Coins from the Dark Ages

Awesome find TK and congrats on finding one of those most sought after coins in England, much rarer than Roman and Celtic!!! They are tiny little coins. HH, Mike

Yeah just had a email from Martin Allen saying there is no proof that clipped Siliqua were used by the saxons :-\
