found this the other day in my backyard. i cant tell what it is, but im pretty sure it is a coin. it could be just a nickel that has been badly corroded or it could be something more :dontknow:

same coin just front and back pasted together

Can you see anything on it? Is it iron?

Looks sorta like an old planchet that was knocked out of an old electrical box. :dontknow:

Looks like copper or brass, probably a penny run over too many times on the street

it rang up as silver and it is in the middle of my backyard, pretty far from any roads.
i cant see anything on it except for the marks. and at 1 oclock on the bottom right image, there is a little rectangular mark on the edge that kind of reminds me of a rimfire mark (it isnt)

It does look like a copper-alloy coin but too far gone as you stated, keep trying

Is it magnetic? That might help in your quest for identification. If not, soak it in Olive Oil for a few weeks. Clean it with a soft tooth brush. Keep repeating this process, and you may find what it is. Good luck! Hope you have a good one!

Don't want to sound negative but soaking a blank coin produces a blank coin, no hope on that one. Just keep searching

okay, well since this was my first 'exciting' find, i spent a lot of effort into cleaning this coin ;D
(olive oil, hydrogen peroxide, heating then cooling) and when that didnt produce any results, i did the big no-no and went at it with copper cleaner. now it looks exactly like it did except copper colored :tongue3: and i can see the high points that werent as corroded and are a little flatter. i can see what looks to be a big V (cant be a V nickle though, since its copper obviosly) went searching for a copper coin with a V on it and found this site: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Coin-Collecting-2297/2009/10/1754-V-coin-unknown.htm

i swear that i can just make out the outline of that exact V on my coin, but it could just be wishful thinking :dontknow:
ill try to take a picture and post it

there is a brass based alloy (tombac) for 1942 thru 1944 canadain 5 cent coins with a big V for victory WW2 era . but their 12 sided :dontknow:

or might be a - copper or brass based five cent type store token --with the roman number V on it which meant 5 --same as "V" nickles did -- in my veiw it is some sort of 5 cent store token -to what
store only knows due to it rough shape

one thing it def is -- "toasty"

that would be much more plausible than a 1700s french colonial coin only a few inches down
you also just reminded me that we had found a 1942 canadian dime behind the paneling on our kitchen wall :icon_sunny:

ill just mark this as solved and put a picture up tomorrow hopefully

Might be an early Colonial or other nation's coin circulated here. The edge suggests it has had some flattening, but I don't see that on the surfaces of the coin. I can almost make out Brittania seated, but not clearly enough to be definate. If a coin, may have a scepter or spear (or long scratch) on it.

I'd like to see more close-ups, although I'm not much good on coins of other nationalities.

well with the addition info of the 1942 canadain dime find --think that a 1942 to 1944 era tombac / brass alloy canadian nickle with a V for victory is a winner.

oh by the way the canadain 42 dime is 50% silver and there are some error ones that are worth a fair bit .

i agree. i also didnt mention that the kitchen is probably only 50 feet from where i found this coin.

and on the Canadian coin, i put it in an envelope with 2 WWI era German paper bills and a 1942 Bolivian 50 cent piece, which i can no longer find unfortunately ???
i lost them about a year ago and still look for it periodically since they were so cool
