Hi all,

I found this object during a hunt in Long Island. From my experience it looks like a coin weight. Although I have been extensively searching, I could not identify it.

It is square and very little (square sides are around 1/2 inch). The size, shape and the letters and symbol on it are definitely relevant with a coin weight. (Although I might be completely wrong :laughing7:) I am sending you some pics anyway. So far, the closest thing i found is "too old" to be the right thing (coin weight for a spanish quadruple real) but i'll keep searching. I am including some pics to this email : my item (black background) and the coin weight for a quadruple real (double pic with grey background). As you can see, they are both squares, they both have the mention "XVI" actually the same letters style and on mine also appears the symbol of what could be a crown or a royal flower. However, my item has nothing on the other side. If you know anything about this, I would be glad to know.

Thanks for your help and also sorry for my english... I am french and it does not help !

I thought about this but I am really having a hard time figuring out which coin weight it is exactly. I thought about an apothecary weight but the symbols do not match. Therefore, I am pretty sure it is a coin weight... but which coin??

Another coin weight (British this time) it is close to : Spur Ryal for James I

And again another version of the weight for the Spanish coin

Similar, but that is not it... :icon_scratch:

I found a number of coin weights with XVI on them. They all refer to the James I spur ryal (gold coin). The XVI = 16 shillings. But yours does not have a crown on it. Maybe not British? :dontknow:

Still searching...

Thanks DCMatt. Well i think mine actually has a crown. At least what looks like it. (right side) It could also be a fleur-de-lys, fleur-de-lis or heraldic lily... sorry i don't know how you say that in English... But indeed, it is definitely not the same crown as the one on the spur ryal coin weight...

Still searching too ! ;)

Also found this on Wikipedia about James I

James VI and I (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scots as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the English and Scottish crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death.

It may be a little early to match my coin weight...

I surprised you haven't weighed it?

I have not seen another coin weight with such simple markings and nothing on the reverse. Very curious... I saw a weight called English Pistol with a fleur de lis but marked on both sides.

Do you know the exact weight of your item? That would be helpful.

Cru gave me the ID, but I couldn't find a match to the half angel coin at .colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk

Really nice coin weight Broken Knee !
The markings are similar ("V") but it's kind of logical with Roman Numbers.

The one i found that i like the most is the one i use for my avatar. It's a coin weight called "Poids de l'Agnel" which you would spell "Pois de l'Agnel" in the old days. It dates back to the beginning of the 14th century and was used to weigh the "Agneau d'Or" or "Golden Lamb". I found it in France. It also has nothing on the reverse by the way.

Coming back to this specific coin weight, it's getting hard to clearly identify it. It seems that DCMatt and I are looking at the same places but indeed having it weighed would help. I will try to do so as soon as i can. Do you think they would weigh it for me at the post office? I tried the automatic machine there but it was just not precise enough.

Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciate !
