Coin? Token? - I know it's a longshot, but here it is..........

I dug this at a mid-1800's house today. Not sure if it is a coin or token? up. I have no clue what it is. It is either copper or brass, has a plain rim (not reeded) edge, weights 3.5 grams, and measures 23mm in diameter. I thought it may be a 2-cent coin (also 23mm), but it is smooth as a babies butt on both sides. Only a few small bumps on one side.
I know there's not much to go on, but I thought it may be worth a try. ;D
Any ideas??
Thanks,
MM

Doug,

I really think this is a coin blank or a token blank. Usually when a coin is worn smooth, the rim is worn down too. I think this one never had any design to begin with. :icon_scratch:

A Colonial blank maybe? ??? :tongue3: ;D
Oh well, just my luck.
Thanks Will.
I know there's an old coin in that yard somewhere.

Are you sure its copper/brass? It looks ferrous. (rusty)

I just filed down an edge. It's brass.
Must have been a token? :icon_scratch:
I guess I'll see if it will work in a vending machine. ;D
Thanks,

I can't help but wonder if that's a shield nickel. They are usually found with most if not all features worn away and have a very similar corrosion pattern as yours. Just Google "shield nickel" and see if you see any similar features. Worth checking. If memory serves, shield nickels were something like 20% Nickel and 80% Copper but did not hold up to wear and tear very well.

The sort of cheap blank token that might be used in a hotel carpark to let you out.

You mean like this one?

Again, the rim on coins wears down right along with the design. Show me a coin that is worn flat yet still has a full rim and I'll mail you a dollar.

MM also said in the reply before yours that he had filed down the edge and the token is Brass.

I have found many "token blanks" over the years that have made me excited, and then made me cry.

They seemed to have served a number of functions, including poker chips, or other types of gaming pieces. I have found a couple with the same patina as Indian Head pennies and tokens around here, and with the identical stamped dot border, but with nothing stamped in the interior.

They are one of the bittersweet triumphs of our hobby.

You got that right Brother. ;D I thought for sure I had an 1800's coin this time. :-[ :'(

Thanks everyone.

Buck,

I did read his post but ideas are worth sharing don't you agree? An alloy of copper such as the shield nickel could resemble brass if you took a file to it.

MM, I hope you get a good ID on your item whatever it may be.

Thanks Pcola.
Your input is much appreciated. My excitement dropped sharply when I got the piece home and saw how smooth it was. I was so hoping for an old detailed coin. ;D Just not to be, but I'm not giving up. I may hit it again on Saturday.
Another thing I did forget to mention is this house/property backs up to the RR tracks that have been in operation since the mid-1800's too.
Possibly a token for the train? Who knows. :icon_scratch:
Thanks again,
MM

It really part of an old "Make your own Colonial Copper Coin" kit. I've found one myself. ;D

Thats funny.

The only U.S. coin that it could possibly be would be the 2 cent piece. If it weighs 6.2 grams you might have a match. Some of the mint error coins can be worth some $$$! Worth a shot to check.

Good grief, just re-read the original post where it said it weighed 3.5 grams. That rules out a U.S. error coin. Maybe foriegn. Prolly just a token though.

Thanks Jason.
I love your TN name & avatar. I've owned three 72' Chevy Cheyenne Supers. Two short beds & one long bed. I still think they are the best looking trucks Chevy ever made.

;D Remember this coin has a rim that shows no wear.

Thanks MM. Yea I have my grandads truck. He bought it new in 72, kept it in a garage its whole life, only got 78,000 miles on it. Best "treasure" I'll ever own!
