they say never clean your coins takes value away

they say never clean your coins takes value away

Yea but why when all it needs a Lil polish to look like new? I wasn't planing on selling them just for my coin books....good eye appeal...know what I mean

That is one of the worst things you can do to a collectable coin. You may not be planning on selling but if one day you do, the value is gone.

There is no longer any value left after polishing. If you do it to common date wheat cents, you can do that, knowing you will only be able to sell them for the copper scrap in the future.

But there is no damage to the coin. I don't see how it can hurt

Yes there is, a dealer will see it, and especially a pro grader would see it. Even I can tell from here it is polished. There are tiny scratches ruining the coin value.

Trust me I wouldn't clean my vdb or 1922 no D but just was saying common dates that are a dime a dozen

They are your coins to do as you please, but you asked if it was bad and if it hurt the coin. The answer is yes on both counts, polishing is damaging to the surface of the coin.

Two things:

1. Why argue with people when you asked for their opinion and they gave it to you?
2. You are correct, you cant ruin value that was never there in the first place. As long as you understand that polishing or cleaning any coin is considered to be "bad" by numismatic standards, then you will be fine. I wouldn't worry about this when it comes to low value coins. Enjoy them for what they are. Cleaned, polished, or left alone - it really makes no difference.

You own a 1922 no D and you are asking if cleaning/polishing coins takes away value........? Lol, something isnt quite right here.

I was just talking about my extras....I know they say it kills value just wanted to know what others think. I was going to put a book together for my kid with clean cents. Didn't do this to get criticized but hey it's all good

Clean and polish away then. Everyone is telling you exactly what they think. No criticism at all.

You can't see the damage but it's there. Under magnification you will see the damage. It's not bringing the luster back, it's stripping the tarnished layer off. Same thing when people use vinegar or hot sauce. They are acidic and eat away the surface of the coin.

Thank you for the info. That is real info that I was hoping to hear thanks

Yes, they are your coins--do what you will. However, if you were to show off you newly polished-for-eye-appeal wheat cents, most people would cringe. When I run into ANY older coin that looks shiny and new, I feel sad for the poor coin, and have basically no interest in it.

You could drill holes in those pennies and make them into a nice bracelet or something. Polishing the coins until they are shiny is about as bad as drilling holes in them.

Even if value is not taken into account you might regret shining them up once your collecting or thinking gets more advanced. When I first started which is getting to be quite a few years ago I thought a shiny coin did look better, but now there's nothing I hate worse than a polished coin, especially silver. I'm lucky it took me a couple years detecting before I started finding the really old silver coins, otherwise I'd probably have several reminders of just how much I hate a buffed up coin.
