Dug this in VA. 1940 motel, but the lot is older, in town. I have found a few 1900's coins near by.
It measures 28 to 29mm. It appears to be a little thicker than normal. Larger than a quarter. I am soaking it in olive oil to see it I can get the crud off. I am not sure it is copper, I scratched it digging it up and the scratch appears almost silverey but it has to be copper, just done know...

That's the only thing I can come up with.
I will keep trying to get some detail out of it. It's s little to old for the area, but who knows.

It rings up at a 78 to 80 on my Gerrett AT Pro. Copper penny range.

It looks too thick to be a large cent. My guess is that it is some type of 1700's foreign coin, I have some that look to be close to that diameter and thickness.

I remeasured it at 28mm plus a little and it is the same at the nickel.

Thinner than I thought, sounds like the right thickness and diameter for a large cent. Still could be a colonial coin though. Great find!

My guess is that it's a Classic Head large cent, I see a little bit of a design on your coin that looks to match up.

I hope it is a classic Head!
72 hours and another hard tooth pick scrub:

I am starting to see a little around the edges.

Pretty toasted I use hydrogen peroxide I use about 5 tbl spoons warm it up in the nicrowave for 30 seconds put your coin in for about 5 to 10 minutes works very well and haven't damaged any coins. This should help alot

Sometimes a foil rubbing helps me see detail when I give it a thorough rub and move it in the light to look for any shadow of detail. coinman123 may be on to it... Nice coin, regardless! It has to be pretty old by USA standards! Congratulations.

I tried it. Did it twice for 10 minutes each time. Not sure it did much. It is going back into the oil. Thanks though.

Oh..it doesn’t change the coin..A photo of the rubbing itself while still on the coin with light shadowing of any image emerging. Sorry I wasn’t more clear.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1538595223.605755.jpg Good persistence.Hopefully the oil bath will help!
