Coil Covers: Yay or nay?

The first family detector was a Whites Gold Master wore out one head, plastics were softer back then. The second one had a coil cover made for it, as we found that a plastic bucket lid fit really well, then we ordered up the actual covers from Whites. I questioned the theory of loosing depth with a cover (being young) remember the man that sold the equipment took a pice of paper layed it on the floor, told me to stand on it, then asked me: Are you any taller" simple answer.
Have cracked a few heads over the decades, mostly hunting rough terrain, ghost towns, bush camps, R/R construction sites from the 1880-5 period. Figure if we were walking over it, then somebody else did long ago as well-so rough and tough spots are never off the table.
Yes covers are needed when detecting the rough-or a replacement coil is going to be needed.
White sugar sand, trimmed grass, tot-lots probably not.

Are coil covers necessary. What do the coils really need protection from?

Does the scuffing really cause longterm damage?
Why would you not use coil cover?

I never used them and have been detecting for around 50 years.
