Coil cover

No, it will not affect perfomance in any way.

Your detector will not stay looking new, so why worry. I am sure if they made blade covers for shovels there would be some takers. Covers pick up moisture and grit which might degrade the signal or cause false signals. Never used one in 40some years and never had a problem with a coil. Of course, I do buy top quality detectors. epoxy filled coils arn't that bad
it's the hallow ones that can crack and leek in moisture and false to the point you can not use
garret and tesoro like that idea of epoxy fill that's why when send it in
they give you a new one
it pretty much shot after it's been epoxied..

the Cover has saved me numerous times, In fact my Stock coil cover fo teh ATP is pretty much cracked all the way around.

When i got the 5x8 Coil, it didnt come with a cover...and first day out i took a huge chip out of the coil from hitting a rock that was sticking up higher than i thought....its worth the 12 bucks

All I know is I put it on I don't have any scratches on my coil thank God and I look forward to taking care of my équipement

Coil Covers are a good investment however,
Never paste them fast
and always clean them out at the end of the day

In my limited detecting experience, I've found coil covers to be another way detector companies command an additional fee. For that matter, the epoxy contained in coils is much more durable than a coil cover.
Unless you plan on selling your detector, coil covers are needless.
Peace

Dusty, I have logged a lot of years behind a detector and all recent units had a coil cover. They are trouble free and snap on and off so maintenance (cleaning) is one minute task. Early units did not have that offering and many had issues with wear spots. I like to keep my coils clean so I keep wipes for that purpose in my truck. It is very hard to clean a scratched up un protected coil that has been in contact with some of the clay and loam soils so I also keep a spare coil cover in case I need to soak the gummed up cover. Good choice in wanting to keep your equipment in top shape with the cover.

You know...I really thought the same thing...And I have talked about it before.....I got my NEW 5x8 Coil for my ATP that didn't come with one, and the first day, i was swinging in an area near rocks, and took a NICE size chip out of the coil...Now Im sure that wouldnt effect the hunting too much...but the way i hunt, i would have that coil destroyed in a month. I hunt alot of woods with large rocks etc.

And no matter how careful you are tryign to be...you WILL end up banging it on something.

Now if you all you hunt are ballfields and flat fields...then maybe you wont need one.

But damn...they are only 12 bucks shipped!..

If you swing your coil correctly you will burn through coil covers in one season depending on how much you hunt. Especially on the sand. I see it all the time. Sometimes only one side will degrade faster depending on your swing. Saves you from having to buy another coil. Now if you hunt once a week for an hour or so, yea then coil covers are worthless.

Hay, I was just thinking, maybe you guys that buy lower quality detectors with lower quality coils should use coil covers! lets see, I have gone 13+ years without a coil cover at $12 a cover. WOW!!!
Frank... Just a thought, if the shoe fits!

No matter what my detector cost, I still like it in first class shape and a coil cover gives me that protection. That is $12 well spent money. I even go as far as to use those plastic leg covers from Home Depot on my Pin Pointer ends to also prevent wear and those cost about a buck and that gives me excellent results also. Having a choice to do or not to do is a wonderful thing and is very much part of being an American.

At a minimal $12, coil covers should be included w any detector purchase! Why are these now considered options or even a necessity!? The average detectorist detects maybe 4hrs per weekend in parks.
Unless I'm working, eating, sleeping, etc., I'm detecting. I've rid myself and my detectors of covers. They only add weight, hold minute metals that cause interference and disturb fully functional detectors.
Peace

What a load of rubbish about coil covers, only ever had to buy one, to replace a worn one. Would you not use a screen saver on a expensive smart phone, or keep your gun in a holder. As for moisture and crap under the coil cover....well derrr clean it out once in a while. And add weight..LOL yea all of at least two ounces.

Ooo Yaa
tell that to Monsanto's

all I'll say yet is Coil covers seem to be an Acquired taste, But if your the type of person
who likes to sell your detector eventually in order to help
offset the cost of a new one.

The look of that coil may be a $100.00 decision

and yes I have seen what heavy use can do to the bottom of a coil.

But when I see people using "extra weight" as an excuse not to put one on

(it's like saying carrying a Garret Probe with is too much extra weight :laughing7:)

It's obvious some really don't care about what could happen

maybe one day Money won't matter to me either

I couldn't get the coil cover off the GT during the four days I had the GT. Dealer gave it to me in the sale (very nice gesture imo), and snapped it on before I left. When the detector started acting up I tried to get it off, no dice.

Not sure I like them or want one on my next detector, but listening to the opinions on the matter both ways.

I had that problem on my Sovereign at times.
I'd be breaking finger nails trying to pull it off on occasion.
Suction maybe ?
