if found in saltwater you will need to soak it in freshwater for about 8 weeks to remove all salt. place it in your toilet tank for 8 weeks.
 

My friend that has found many iron spikes soaks them in vinegar for several weeks to remove encrusted stuff, then rinses in clear water.

Soaked in white vinegar to clean off the green crust and shells, then tumbled in soap and water, let us see it when done! 009.JPG

Sorry about the poor photo quality, girlfriend is out of state with her good camera. the one on the left has been cleaned, it is a lot more impressive then the photo makes it look. I found the two on the right today, along with the piece of copper still attached to the one just right of the dime. Must have held the copper sheeting to some kind of ship.
