cleaned my first batch of coins this week with with vinegar salt and a touch of dawn liquid detergent about about $200 dollars worth rinsed them off under water and afterhandling them the next day i had hives on parts of my body red spots (rash) was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with this from handling coins for this reasom am trying to run down all the variables or maybe it wea something i ate. would appreciate some responses. dave

Vinegar is a weak acid and it could cause a rash on some people with long exposure. As for using it on coins it tends to make some of them pink from the copper.

I have used vinager and salt before but as sandman says will turn some orange. I found best way t clean is in a ock tumber with fish gravel water and a drop of dawn dish soap and tumble for a hour. They are good enough to go to the bank.....Matt

+1 with Matt. The only difference is that I was told to use a little lemon juice when cleaning the 'silver' (clad 25, 10, 5 cent) coins.....helps remove the red from being in my iron ore clay (or cleaning them with even one penny in the batch, ::), let's just say I know)

Never use vinegar to clean! What a madness it would be! Try dish soap: it's less acid...

Has anyone tried using TSP, tri-sodium phosphate, for cleaning? Would it hurt anything, like the silver, clad, copper or zinc? (This is some VERY potent cleaning material and should be used only after reading the cautionary statement on the box. Available in powder form at most hardware stores....quite inexpensive)

I clean allot of my coins with vinegar, but I use the 20 percent kind and it's also good for killing weeds and poison ivy.
