If it's been in the ground for a while, you might as well clean it, since it's already lost any numismatic premium. Just be gentle. Mild soap and water works ok. Olive oil works, too. Ammonia is by far the best for all coins except pennies. Coin dip is phenomenal, but only dip for a half second or so until you have practice. That stuff it powerful! For pennies, try vinegar and salt if olive oil or soap doesn't work. The most overlooked part of cleaning coins is the rinsing and drying. Rinse them thoroughly with water, and very gently rub them dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

If it hasn't been in the ground, don't clean it unless you are willing to destroy its value.

Daryl,

Not the one, but I like it better. I have put the link in my favorites. Go a little deeper into specifics and touches on relics. This is a good one.

If I know I have a common copper penny or zinc penny I put them into a plastic container throw in a little sand from the local tot lot and add a little tap water and shake them for 10-15 mins. That way they are pretty clean and will roll easily if you decide to do that.

For wheats and other coppers I have found the potato method to work very well. Haven't found any silver I need to clean yet so cannot help you there.

I've found that just sticking to finding gold coins. Two at a time if you can. Cuts down on the cleaning time. They rinse right off. ;D

Daryl

Just too tempting guys. Sorry.
