Hi all,
I came across this historical marker in this shopping center in the town where I live describing
the trenches. It is between a doctors office and a Chinese restaurant and is modern.

My question: if there no sign saying no trespassing or metal detecting should I go risk it
until somebody kicks me off. I just got a pin pointer would that help. I always keep my
detector in my car.

If there is anybody that lives in Leesburg, Va area let me know if you join me for digging.

No for several reasons.

1. You are trespassing and defacing someone else's property. It is against the law. You could go to jail.
2. Where there is a historical marker, it could be protected as a historic site. You could go to jail.
3. The relic hunting community has a bad reputation because a minority of relic hunters hunt without permission. When they are caught, all relic hunters suffer by association.

Try to ask around to find out who owns the property. Ask for permission and you will be good to go. If they say no, look around the area and ask permission of other property owners. If there are trenches there, there could be more activity nearby.

If it says Historical marker it is a registered site maybe with the Park Service so my advice is nooooooooooo. :hello:

I'm picturing a 'Wal-Mart + Anchor Stores & a New Dr's Office & New Chinese Place with a Half acre or 2 where there is a field or woods'
Did you mean the Historic Sign is new?

IMO With all that development ' Must not be to Historic ' :dontknow:, . If there is a patch of woods of field with intact trenches , Def, Stay Away.
But
If the Shopping center is Old 1970's ish Eyeball the Eroded Areas. That's what I "Maybe would do".

Here there are Historic Markers With Shopping Centers & Neighborhoods built Right Beside them.

On small CW Areas BIG Development Money usually trumps History.
That said if the Land Owners wanted to sell & were likely offered Good money, & say the local Historic People wanted them to donate the land . Hmmmm What would I Do???

Here now at-least they "Try" to Build Around the Trenches that are left.

It was much, much Different back in the 1930's-1960's & Much Different in the 1980's -2000 around here , but all tho the Development was bad (That the sites are mostly gone now) but For Relic Hunters in the past had a Hay Day Finding relics when the building Boom was going On.

Speaking for My area 'North & North West of Atlanta Good Sites & Relics are becoming Super hard to Come by.

Heck in a few years a Fired Minnie Will likely be Enough to Win Civil War Find of the Month at the local Relic Hunters Clubs.

Sorry for my rant.

OP Just hunt where legal & as many places as you can , as u got a-lot of Competition for whats left even in VA.

Good Luck
