Civil War Tent Peg / Stake ??

Hi Treasurenet Forum.

This is my first post. Thanks in advance.

I recently bought this Civil War era (hopefully) tent peg or stake for my father who collects antiques. He likes Civil War items and other military and hand tool items. It looks like an interesting item. Please see the pictures I attached. When I research Civil War era tent pegs, they all come up as smaller wooden style, or very simple iron styles (just curved at the end). Also, I have not seen any that are actually marked with the "US" military letters, like this one is.

Anybody out there that provide additional information? Is it possibly for a larger command type tent, and not an individual soldier style tent?

Yes... the brass tube tent-rope adjuster was invented and patented in 1880. First adopted for US Army use in 1889. See the documents below.

Again, yes. The ones with the Patent-date were manufactured during the 17-year lifetime of the Patent. After it expired, the design was "fair game" and anybody could manufacture it without having to mark it, nor pay the inventor a Royalty fee.

People who insisted the brass ones were civil war tried to find one in a civil war photo of a tent... but none have been found. Here is one showing the civil war era tent-rope adjusters were made of wood. Yes, that's Old Abe standing alongside it.
