Civil War Sewing Pin Fishhook and More..

I found a hole in a river near a camp that has a lot of stuff washed into it. It's too deep to detect by holding my breath and going under, so I'm having to use my SCUBA rig. Pictured are some Civil War bullets, a few horse shoes, an 1820 dime, a colonial copper, buttons, bullet worms, a grapeshot, a few chisels and other odds and ends. Shot a video of the hunt and hope to get it up when things slow down a little.

This is (to me) one of the coolest things I have found in quite a while. I found this in the same hole as my last photo. Pictured above the dime is what appears to be a brass sewing pin that a soldier has fashioned into a fish hook. I found a couple of these there and one was not bent. I find the bullets that soldiers have poked holes in to make sinkers, but always wondered what they used for hooks. Now we know...

Thanks for checking out my post!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you that almost everything was eyeballed!

Well, there is no way to tell for sure. The earliest they could realistically be is @ 1750 when that area was first being settled. I have found a few large colonial era buttons and coppers there in the past. I assumed CW era because that is what the vast majority of items I am finding appear to be. Would a 1750 time-line be consistent with Thames pins, or are they much older?

Very cool. Always love seeing your river finds. Congrats!

I have wondered what age they are. They are sold as circa 1600-1700, but I have no sold proof what they are:dontknow:

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if I find anything else out about their age.
