Went early to a spot I have been hitting lately, (road tearout) guess there working overtime on it today.so I decided to go to our outdoor swapmeet, going thru a large box of books I found a old Bible from 1812 (Philadelphia print) thought it was cool and $15.00 price was right. When I got home I started looking thru it better and found a folded piece of paper inside. When I took it out I realized it was paper money, I think? Looks real and look is appropriate for the age. Can anyone help me on this if they know anything about paper money. If its real......

Great Piece -- But its not Civil War its THE WAR OF NORTHERN AGRESSION

Hey, Mr Citiboy.

Once I asked an older gentleman who was a tour guide for the Gettysburg Battlefield what he thought of the term "War of Northern Aggression". And he responded, "Tell everyone you meet who uses that term that up here In Gettysburg we refer to The Civil War as "The War of Southern Arrogance". People sure have diverse opinions of that war! HH :icon_salut:

Nice discovery of the note.

RayRay any update on if your note is the real deal or not ? just wondering.

Seems to me that some southern folks first fired some cannons at a U.S. fort named "Sumpter" That would in any court make the southerners the "aggressors"!! Nice note, and a great way to find it!!

Sorry I did not get back on this, had people in from out of town. Plan on going this week sometime to get authenticated. Thanks for the interest.

Come on Cityboy289! Everyone knows the Civil War was when a few Southern States declared war on our country, The United States of America, and.....well the rest is history. :laughing7:

In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without..."being yourselves the aggressors"...from Lincoln's first Inaugural address. Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread into a historical debate, but Mr. Rayray's find is just that interesting. If that is a real Confederate note WOW, that is living history and a real treasure you have there!!!

Hey, Mr. RayRay

My favorite resource on the Civil War is a PBS documentary by Ken Burns called (of course) "The Civil War". It has five 2-hour CDs. Lots to enjoy if you haven't seen it, and covers the whole time period. Some well known actors portraying the voices of historical people. Mostly told through actual letters and diaries of the soldiers and townsfolk who lived through the worst of it. Some good humor too, like this letter written to a South Carolina newspaper after S.C. left the Union,
..."Pardon me Sirs, but is the State Legislature always drunk?" The music is also well done. it's available on line.

Here is a touching excerpt...

Two great finds for the price of one! Finding old money in old books is just the kind of stuff we treasure hunters dream about!!! Can't wait to hear what more you learn about it.

I love the bible! I collect old King James Bibles and I would say you have a rare find. The bible in my opinion is worth more than the money.
Let me know if you'd be interested in selling it.
Most of the time you don't find the seals/locks intact like that.
Great find!

If you don't mind could you snap a couple photos of some pages, in particular the preface to the reader and also the publishing company. Is it from the Bible society of Philadelphia?
