Well. . . i was going to ask for some info on this, but the one on the "banner" was staring me in the face. :tongue3: The reverse says. . Abram Compton, Monterey, NY ll Cavy.
-This was found at a cellar hole about 4 miles from the Town of Monterey. The only info i could find on him was his name and the fact that he was able to fight for the Union army.

Congratulations on a great Civil War relic. This one should be on the Banner too, I don't care if there is already one up there. My vote is going in.

This was great, Thank you everyone who helped with gathering info. I`m glad everyone enjoyed my post. To me it also has a local significance, he rests in a nearby cemetery and his name appears on the local maps. I don`t have to drive 800 miles to gather good info, it`s all right here. His house was about 2 miles from the site the tag was found.. . A lot of local history and from Irish`s posting, A lot of CW history also. A pic of his headstone and a simple paragraph will display the set quite nicely in a 3x5 clear plastic card case as an awesome C.W. Historical Relic. I attached a photo of his name on the 1874 map.
Thanks again,

What a superb find! Congrats, that thing is remarkable. This was a fun thread to read

Wow. Amazing when you can bring an item back to life with the research. My fathers side fought of of Pa with the calvary. I need to look and see what unit. I have his GAR reunion group photo. Be interesting to see if this guy is in it.
Great post.

Wow great thread! BANNER should be given regardless of the other. These are very special finds and should be treated as such....congrats

I agree. I found one earlier this year too and it's probably the most personal relic I've found!!!

Very nice find! Congrats!!

Just out of curiosity, how many votes for Banner does it take for a Banner find?

Awesome find. I recently found what I believe is to be a GAR ID tag, most likely from the Civil War. If i've done this right, the image of one side is below. I believe this is the Grand Army of the Republic symbol. Afraid to clean it, but would love to see the name on it and find the family this belongs too!
