My Grandmother gave this to me and told me it was a slave tag. However, we found a soldier listed with same name, birth date, and county. He was serving in the 40th Va Co. F. He was mustered in in 05/26/1861 and out in 02/08/1864. I guess what my question is, what is the probability that this is a civil war id tag?

Here's his discharge certificate - I had to cut and paste to get it on one page and that is why the margins don't line up.

I've been trying to edit this post to add another cleaner copy but the board keeps giving me an error so I'll try to do it in another post here...

OK I see he was 25 years of age at discharge so I think it matches and I think its safe to call it a Civil War tag..

If there @ some point in time you want too donate this to a museum in the Northern Neck or a museum in Stafford,Virginia (One of the biggest civil war museums in the united states) please send me a PM. I would love too have D.P. Newton who runs the museum look @ this and also another Civil War expert! This tag sure is a beauty and thankfully your ancestors kept in a nice safe spot all these years! Again thanks for sharing.
