Whats up my friends. I finally sat down and got the graphite pencils photoed. I found these last weekend while I was digging a pit and hadn't had a chance yet to post them. I found one two weeks ago and had no idea that I would come up with this many more. These are pretty rare to find and wanted to share with all my fellow friends, CivilMan, MM, TyMcMurray, Buck, Kyle, Kirk, etc. and everyone else who loves the Civil War era stuff...

Sentinel,

I have never dug or even Seen one! (Although I've read through plenty of CW letters written with them  )

What Cool finds.

Thanks for posting those--I'm sure we won't see another collection of them on here for quite some time in the future (if ever).

Regards,

Buck

Great finds, Josh.
I keep expecting to find one of them, eventually,
but they are obiously more rare than I thought.
To find 5 of them is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could you do me a favor and check them with
your machine and tell us what they read on the
VDI? Thanks and congratulations!!!

Sentinal,
You are finding some pretty cool stuff where you are at. Those graphite pencils are indeed very rare seeing how I've never even heard of such a thing coming from a civil war site. Are they structurally sound or do they want to crumble easily? For some reason I am thinking that they would register as Hotrock or something. Keep up the good work and I'm anticipating more from you in the near future. Kyle is without a computer for awhile so he and Kirks replies will be few and far between for awhile.
Chris

Man, you "wrote" the book on finding those.. Congrats! ;D jgas

Pretty awesome addittion to any CW collector's display's!! Did you find those in the bottle dump or can you actually detect them?Nice going Josh....Thank's for sharing Bud!!

I very much thank you for this post and the pics as it has helped me identify an item I found about a month ago at my foundation site. Mine was about 3-4 inches long until I broke it in half trying to figure out what it was which I still did not do. I knew it were not stone , wood , or metal. I very much appreciate the post and many congrats.

Very cool find! I probably would have just tossed it in the garbage not knowing what I had. I assume it doesn't register on a detector, correct?

Yo, Josh Dude, I just got my laptop back today from Gateway. The sucker is fixed, and I'll be back on Tnet for good now.

Those pencils are pretty cool looking. I always wondered what they looked like back in the good ole days...Colonial and Civil War periods.

Those are some serious finds made by a great hunter!

Hey Ty, I will scan it tonight but I dont know if they give off a signal or not....They are graphite so I would expect that they may give off some type of signal...But these were found about 4-5 feet below the surface near where I found the buckle.

Thanks Chris  The graphite pencils are hard to find because they were reserved for soldiers with money to spare and/or officers as the other soldiers would just widdle a minie into a lead pencil.

Believe it or not, they are as hard as rocks!

I found them in a general dump along with buckles, bottles, etc. This area is not far from a Civil War era fort. I am not sure if they will give out a good signal or not...I am going to try scanning it though when I get home....These were found very deep...So there is no telling, they may not have been able to stand up to the elements on the surface and had crumbled away....That may be one of the reasons as well, that they are harder to find on the surface

Hey, it is MY pleasure Midnightrider08. That is one of the main reasons I post so that my friends and others can enjoy them and if the occasion arises, help them I.D. one of their own relics such as this has just happened. It was NO PROBLEM bud!

Josh,

Yo, man, awesome recovieries, dude! They are definitely kickarse artifacts! You made me proud, my friend from VA!

Keep swinging that White's machine, brotha!

Kirk

We have quite a few of these and yes they will ring up on the machine. They have to be close to the coil though. I never knew what they were until I saw this post. Good thing I don't throw anything out that I can't identify. Last time I cleaned out my bag I was inside the house and one got put in the cabinet where I keep artifacts and relics. The rest that I have are either in the bed of the truck in the pile or in one of the many buckets I put scrap in. Now I will have to dig around and see how many pencils I have. Thanks for the post as it helped me to realize what I have.

You reckon one of those graphites could have written this letter I uncovered at Ft. Powhatan a few years back? LOL. :icon_scratch:
I found it in the match case up under a root about 7 inches deep. I was hoping for a plate. :-*
But, I like what I ended up with.

Writing isn't good enough to read more than a few words here and there.

Cheers :icon_salut:
