Civil War Campsite Hunt *Updated!*

Re: Civil War Campsite Hunt, 3rd Installment!

Hi, Buckleboy,

Let me explain a little better. I'm not wanting your site info. Granted, if you want to share, I'm only a human detectorist! Really, I just want to know that it's being preserved. I'm glad you're keeping a diary. I also do not give out site info and understand the sentiment completely. I do not like to draw, but sketches of recovered bullets and other artifacts are very important in so many ways. Troop movements, weapon and ammunition statistics, etc. can be estimated by your sketches. This information is useful to you and if you ever share it in the future, then to others. The GPS coordinates obtained at a site can just be noted on the sketch sheet and then the sheet can be stuck in a folder or it could even be just a page in your diary/journal. With so many housing developments and so forth, it's nice to come back in ten years, and say, "Well, the site was here.", instead of, "Well, the site was somewhere around here, but since everything is changed, I don't know exactly where it was!" I also take plenty of pictures as well. I wasn't asking for info, just asking that info be preserved.

Now, as to coordinates...currently, I'm not writing a Civil War volume, although that is not to say it won't happen in the future. What I am doing is building a database of coordinates. I am interested in plotting some of the old Civil War routes, for example, the old state road in the Olympian Springs area. I'm currently TRYING to learn how to use some mapping software and if I can gather enough data, then I HOPE that I can generate some useful maps. That may or may not happen. I am trying though. I don't get to work on it very often, but when I can obtain coordinates, I stick them in the database. It's definitely a long-term personal pet project, but fun. At the rate I'm going, it will be awhile before I can produce some really good (accurate) usable maps. I'm a couple hours away from that area, but I tend to get out that way occasionally, good musky fishing in the Lake. In the other post, I was asking for the coordinates for the resort to stick in my database and if anybody knew if it was close to what was supposed to be the old state road. I know where the road runs west of there, but not exactly in that area.

I have no idea how significantly archaeological the resort is.

I hope this info helps you feel more comfortable with my questions. If not, feel free to ask me more or PM me.

Thanks,
Cavers5

Re: Civil War Campsite Hunt, 3rd Installment!

Thank you caver. I was just curious about the questions. I do record this information--and I am quite certain that there will never be a housing development on the campsite mentioned above. At least not for a very long time. I also sketch maps of the places I hunt and write down detailed directions in my diary. Frequently I even include the approximate locations on the hand-drawn map of any significant finds. Thus the diary becomes a tool for me if or when I return. It helps me find the site, it tells me how much I found last time and when I last hunted it, and it refreshes my memory on all the details like how long I spent hunting or what discrimination level I was hunting at. I would in fact urge every detectorist to do this--not just for the preservation of history, but also as valuable aid due to the information contained therein.

All the Best,

Buckleboy
