Here's the second helping for your viewing pleasure. Kindafoundabuckle, Metal Detective, and I got together to hunt our campsite again this weekend. Here are just the highlights:

I think we had picked most of our previous area clean, but I tore around through the wooded area (wearin' myself out!) and managed to snag a great dropped .69 cal. 2-ring bullet. Quite a beauty, and one of the rarer types.

We then went to another area and Kindafoundabuckle and Metal Detective started digging bullets right away. Fired minieballs, a tiny flat button, and carved lead for Metal Detective and two nice 3-ring .69 cal bullets for KFBuckle.

The biggest surprise on the hunt was a hunk of silver! KFBuckle got this great signal only a few inches deep near a plowed field. You should have seen the happy dance he did while on all fours in front of the hole! I knew it had to be good to get him that excited. When we got over there, this is what we saw:

A beautiful 1908-D Barber Quarter just laying there in the sun in the top of the hole!

This was a great hunt, great friendship, and interesting finds. I love huntin' with you guys! I hope we can do it again soon. Here are some photos of other finds from the campsite, including that great brass wedding band KFBuckle unearthed last weekend. Enjoy!

Oh, and KFBuckle found this interesting little thin brass buckle. Any info on this item would be much appreciated. We're pretty certain it's Civil War era.

Very nice CW finds and a great day out with friends! I have found a few of those buckles here in Germany and would date them to the mid 1800s as I found a few 1800s coins close to the buckles. HH, Mike

The thin brass buckle looks similar to a kepi buckle, but it is a little bigger than usual and has a round center bar as opposed to the flat one. I would think it is probably kepi buckle, just a different variant than the more common type found.

The little buckle is only about an inch long.

cool finds!

Thank's for the pic's buckleboy....Excellent group of find's.It's nice to have some help on a dig like this, cover a liitle more ground at least.Congrat's to you all...Sweet 08'...

That 2 ring .69 is called a Muskatoon. Find a few in this area, but not very common.

Nice finds! The thin brass buckle looks simalar to those found on some of the Union forage caps? Not sure but it could be. Tsgman

Thank you for your great replies, as well as the info on the little buckle. We had sorta suspected it might be a kepi buckle.

Those are great finds. You guys did well. I really like the buckle and the ring. I bet that ring is CW era as they had them back then. It looks like you found a wedge tent or half tent grommet. That would be a good indicator of a CW campsite. I'd hit that area more. If it was a full camp then you'd have kitchen, livery, commisary, sutler (store) and possible hospital and parade grounds (if it was big enough) there to detect. Great finds.

Nice finds! I love the Muskatoon and the coin!
