Civil war button??

Found this on a civil war battlefield private property with permission. Smaller than a penny. Can't make out front design. Thinking an eagle? Or a cannon on it crossed? Any experts out there? Any way to clean this?

I think it is a eagle button, looks like it is upside down in the picture, fertilizer has had it's way with it, but if you hadn't of got it would be gone before long

[SUP]5[/SUP]It is a Union Army button, in the photo of the front of the button with the penny, note ths the top of the button is turned a quarter turn, with the eagle's head at 3:00 o' clock. The eagle's head us actually worn away, but you can still see the feathered wings and bumps that were the legs! Congrats. Sub

It appears to be a Union General Service button. I think I can see vertical lines in the shield.
