Happy Dancin Happy Dancin..Me and my metal detecting buddy Dyrty went out to an old Fort site in my hometown today. It was built by the Union when they took over our town during the Civil war. I live in Natchez if you don't know. Anyway we were walkin the wood line in an old trench and bang. Solid 60-65 on My F75. It read 6 inches...I dug down and out popped this beauty. Still has the shank intact and is a big button. Looks to be overcoat size. I am scared to clean it to id it more. I just ran some water on it. It appears to have a C inside this shield. Is it a Cavalry overcoat button?? I am not for sure...Can someone with more Civil war knowledge help me out. I don't have a book to id this baby..Plus I am nervous as a cat. But happy as a lark. Any help would be appreciated. Plus I found some more stuff I am gonna post later. Thanks..

Union Cavalry button if im not mistaken. great find! :thumbsup:

No I haven't cleaned it. How should I clean it??? I usually use a toothbrush and water on delicate stuff..What do you guys think i should Do?

Yep Zax.....That's what you got there,Beautiful Dig.....something on my wish list still.Probably around a $60 button.....Congrat's and HH!! :thumbsup:

I imagine if its anything like a coin you don't want to clean it to much but. A peroxide hot bath may do the trick and a tooth brush. Don't use oil that takes to long, its noneffective and messy. Electrolysis may work but if its copper careful don't zap it to much or to long. Copper tends to fall apart if its not in good shape.... The one I found I just used a dry brush a little on it and put it in a 2x2.

Cool find,

Keep @ it and HH!!

I think I am just gonna leave it alone. I tend to mess finds up when I clean them. I am not a good cleaner.

Very nice button,Congrats :thumbsup:
Take a toothpick and clean up the back lightly.take the toothpick hold it sideways and rub across the back,that will take the dirt off the back and leave the dirt in the back mark so you will be able to read it.
Or try just running warm water over it to see if it loosens the dirt so you can read.Don't rub it hard,very lightly.
Then post a pic of it after you clean it.
It will display very nice. :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
And yes that is a Cavalry Button

All I can make out on the back of the button is a D. The rest of the letters are unreadable. If I was to put it in olive oil would that ruin it??

Olive oil will leak into the button & then will leak out slowly for years. Looks fine to me. You can always clean later or not at all. But once you have cleaned it wrong, you can't undo it.

Do NOT olive oil that button!

Read my post on cleaning buttons in the Cleaning and Preservation section of the forum. Should be up fairly close to the top.

I know this is an oldie but a goodie.

Cavalry = Military
Calvary = Christ

They are not interchangeable.

Thanks,

Any help with the J looking thing. I have no clue what it is. It doesn't rust so it isn't iron I don't think. and the little half moon round thing. I have to get one of those Civil war artifact books. That is next check.

Fantastic finds, I'll be doing the happy dance too. CONGRATS!! No clue to the J shaped item, but the bigger one looks like a can opener.

:wink: RR

Pretty button! Clean it up and let us see it! The one long thing looks like a can opener, but one that's a pain to operate! Gotta go up-down-up-down all the way around. Not comfortable! Then there's the horse shoe and another button and Span can opener. Don't know the rest, sorry! Congrats on the military button!
