Need HELP identifying this bullet I dug recently in Hampton, VA. It is not conical in shape, but rounded at the top. Bullet is solid (not hollow) and the underneath is all white, with a small white spot in the middle that seems off color from the rest of the base.

The two coins are rosy clad DIMES for sizing purposes. Click on the picture to enlarge it.

The 3 balls measure about 1 1/4 inches in diameter each. The middle one looks like it had been shot as it has a slash in it and is somewhat deformed (same size as the other two). Wondering what these are also. Too small for musket balls I think.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially on the bullet.

thanks. Scott :icon_scratch:

Some of the CW era derringer slugs looked like that one. I'd suggest that you go down that path and see what you find. Definitely looks CW era to me.

i just read this post of yours. i got the "civil war projectile II" book today and INDEED, the bullet i saw that matched it was the derringer, but mine is .44 or .45 caliber and the one they have (that looks 100% like mine) is .38 caliber. was there a .44 or .45 caliber derringer in civil war? did soldiers use the derringer in civil war?

Damn that would be one heck of a Derringer to hold on to if it was a .44 or .45 one.

sure would. guess they did have derringers of that size. i looked it up in my projectile II book and it was IDENTICAL to the derringer they had pic of and listed. just a little larger than theirs.
