Civil War Battlefield Find "What Is it"

Can anyone help out with this? This is a find that we have been trying to dig out on 2 seperate occasions. It is in the woods behind the line of where the Confederates had a row of 12 canons on the battlefield/farm that we have begun to hunt. It is the same location that we have found a lot of artillery scrhapnel and a whole 3 in Dyer shell.

One side you can defiantly make out that is is a large section of chain and it runs under the large root. The left side is hard to make out if it is more chain or something else. Was chain link this large used for anything during the Civil War? Judging from the size and age of the tree, it has to be old enough. This thing runs under the root.

Anybody have any ideas? Still trying to get it out

Thanks

Daryl (bioprof),

Thats is interesting that you teach how to research on the web, I would appreciate some tips (in another thread so we don't hijack this one) on internet research. As far as justifying your posts to other members (that have been registered less then 2 months and only 29 posts) don't worry about your reputation. I have read most of your posts and worked with you on one in particular that has yet to be finalized and your knowledge and abilities are very apparent. I found the link to the "artillery ear plate chain" and posted the link and the subject matter that I thought might be relevant along with a picture (post# 11). I don't know for sure that this is what is under the tree but I would like to help ID it if possible and welcome any other opinions. If nothing else maybe it will help send someone else in the right direction so it can positively be ID'd or ruled out as a possibility.

Charlie

P.S. I hope you got something for that cough Troy, it sounded pretty bad.

Well charlie that is because I keep getting banned but there is no stopping new accounts so I made this one up. :) So guess I'll make up a few more.

I'm growing a beard... I don't feel any smarter.

I like the fact that Bio P throws some ideas around and I appreciate that he can know something about the CW without having been "Aggressed" ... I'm also impressed with the Professor thingy.

However in this case, with this find I also think: "That isn't anything but an old chain under a tree root in Williamsburg, VA." I've left long-assed chains at fort sites... because - it's a freaking chain! :P

Having just agreed with troyx5 - I want to add that I am also a Yankee... and am very suprised that troyx5 has been banned from the site with those awesome people skills! How unjust, after being aggressed upon and such. It musta been that damned South African Professor's fault... who got a job teaching at a college because he was SO stupid.

I think it's just a chain... but what if it's not "just a chain"? Keep diggin... good luck... don't kill the tree to get it out.

BioP - You've done great work here... keep it up.

oldbuzzard... welcome to TreasureNet! :) Keep on posting...

THanks everyone for thier opinions and help trying to ID this. That is what this Forum is for. It is to ask for help in getting ideas on something that we have found and need help ID'ing. Eventually it will come out and if is only a chain, then hey, I found a chain. I can put it in my bucket of other pieces of junk iron etc. Maybe it is more than a chain. Will not know until we get it out.

By the way Troy, Mangos, or whatever you are this week until you get kicked off again, don't you have anything better to do than "bash" and offend people on this site. That is why you keep getting banned.
>:(

If you don't have anything that is helpful in identifying this "chain under a tree" go raid another post and leave mine alone.

Savant

Thanks for your help. The dimensions on the links closly match what is given on the description that I recieved by following the link you gave.

Maybe that is what it is. The battle where this is located on the Confederate side had a battery of 12 to 16 Cannons facing about the same that the Union side had. The Confederates retreated several times in a fast manner. Maybe they dropped one.

This was in Suffolk, not Williamsburg. Not sure where Williamsburg came in .

Trish,

I think the landowner would shoot be if I made firewood out of his tree. Ha Ha ;D

Re: Civil War Battlefield Find "What Is it"

I note that in the image of the cannon toggle, as with ALL toggles (harpoons heads, parka buttons, etc) , the attachment is in the middle. In the item under the roots it appears the chain is attached to one end.

Don't know what it is, but keep digging. Could be an anti-sway chain from a plow or towed implement, log dragger, stump puller, cannon anchor or flail mower. Chain is chain until it's hooked to something. ;D

One thing you've got to watch about Professors is that they are specialized. But I'll stand with BioProf even if he is originally from Georgia. He's my friend because we have a common enemy: ignorance. I agree with him much more than not.

From what I can see from the picture the links in the chain appear to be of an old style of link common in the time period of the civil war .Later links have a shorter length for added strength and resistance to binding. 2 centsworth

:) Yeah I do tend to "offend" some people but I can take it if you want to try to send it back haha. Anyways - post some pics of that chain when/if you get it out.

As far as the professor - just like my co-workers. You can have 6 degrees from the University of Bombay. That doesn't give you common sense. I've seen more stupid college educated people who THOUGHT they knew something. And yes I have multiple degrees.

Oh, so you're a professor, too.

I guess this could be true. But, we can't go bunching everyone into the same professor pot, now can we.

It is our opinion, young man, from our experience with OUR professor that the above statement wouldn't hold true.

Or course, with you only having just arrived you couldn't know that.

I told my son when he went to college, 'keep your mouth shut and your eyes open.' He made bunches of friends that way.

Outty.

That is funny :) But no I'm not a professor. I thought about being a full time student but found most of them were too liberal for me and I wanted to experience life in the real world. Anways, That sure is a long chain isn't it?

Born and raised in Elberton, GA. Always been interested in the Civil War. I read a lot and look up stuff on the Internet. I used to teach how to use the Internet for research and can tell a good site from a bad one. Just something I like to do. I will stand behind my responses and provide references in my posts if possible so others can see what I see and let me know if I am stupid. I can take it. I am really putting my reputation as a professor on the line when I post so I take it very seriously and do my homework before I post. I work hard at being non-biased and historically accurate.

How's that? ;)

Daryl

Damn well said Daryl....I have check out a number of your post...and they sir are right on the money. Keep up the good work. TomB (cw buff)
