Just moved to NC and have been super busy with my new job. Made it out today to a house built in 1800 that was in the middle of a civil war skirmish. There is still patch work on the chimney from repairs due to cannon.

The gentleman told me that it was hit hard for two years buy a guy that would come on Saturdays so the signals were few. I decided to dig this strong repeatable iron signal and I pulled the very heavy canister out from about 8 inches.

This very well could be some type of old battery or car part but are there any features that say its a something to do with artillery.

Only other notable finds are a silver spoon and my first musket ball

I couldn't find any picture of shot that matches this one. Most look like the have a conical top. And this one doesn't have holes in the bottom as described for the sawyer canisters

As my posting-name indicates, my specialty area of relic-study is pre-1900 artillery projectiles. I'm sorry to have to tell you, your find is definitely not an artillery projectile.

Red James Cash's guess is a "reasonable" one, because unfired Canister ammunition for a cannon does closely resemble your find. (Canister ammo was a tinned-iron can filled with large lead or iron antipersonnel balls, kind of like giant buckshot.) But no Canister ammo had a metal knob projecting from the can's top, which is what we see in your photo of your find.

Thank you for your input. I've seen your posts before and was hoping you see this. It's probably just part of some farm machinery etc

It might be an old starter or generator housing?? Try cleaning it up- might be able to figure out what it is.

Well at least I left you at least one thing to dig. :tongue3: Did you try the woods and creek area?

How big is it? My first thought was oil filter, but don't know the size, however looking at the card the can appears to be small.???

The card is credit card size. It's super heavy for its size. I left it there and let the owner know I put it up against a tree. An explosive bouncing around in the back of my jeep isn't high on my to do list
Safe to go get it now I assume
