The church was probably painted. Yes. Paint on exterior brick, sometimes to protect soft or poor quality brick. There are plenty of 19th C. brick houses in Pennsylvania (and elsewhere) that have been painted many times over.

No, I think its different colour bricks mixed to made a pattern, just seems they got darker :dontknow:
