I have NO idea about Indian artifacts except for flint and pottery items so I need some input. This bowl was excavated from a known Indian area. It was in a protected dry area by a creek bed. I know it looks old and handmade but I have no clue as to whether bowls like this were used by Indians in North Carolina. I anyone could shed some light on what to look for, where to look, any help at all in trying to ID this would be of great help.

Thanks,

Daryl

It certainly looks the part. Not a whole lot of wood artifacts show up as most have rotted away. I am no expert at all but my primary concern would be preservation. If it is as old as it appears then exposure to heat, humidity, sunlight, any number of things, could potentially have detrimental effects on the pieces. I would start asking a lot of questions to people in the know about how to make sure it's preserved/stabalized. Very cool piece!!!!

Thanks Cannonman17. I agree. I hope someone on Tnet can help but we may have to go to a museum for some help.

The piece reminds me of a early settlers dough bowl. Most were made quite a bit larger but the overall shape is the same. Just a my opinoin but looks close.

Hi SoIll,

I think you might mean Polyethylene Glycol. Ehtylene glycol is anti-freeze and is very toxic to people and pets. It has a sweet taste and they will lap it up. It shuts the kidneys down and they die a pretty slow and painful death. Polyethylene Glycol - is usually referred to as PEG. It comes in various molecular weights for different situations. It is also not that toxic.

I think we are on the same page and it works great.
