So those little bitty ones, what rocks were typically used to make them? I find alot that are shaped like hearts, tear drops and guitar picks.

Guitar picks? I would like to see them. Might be scrapers and this tiny thing was chipped out of a type called Chert which is in the flint family.

They made from this type of stone. You can see the dents where they tried to rock out before they chipped it further. Maybe these didnt make the cut for them or maybe they just never got to finish them.

Rock, I've always wondered.. How do you tell the difference between flint and chert?

One is a bit harder than the other I do believe. Chert comes in different types. Coastal Plains Chert is Tan, Chert here where I live at is black, then we have a special Chert here which is called skunk chert cause it has white running through it, there is redish chert here and I have seen gray chert here. I believe flint is all the other colors. I will post some skunk chert for you. I am told you can only find it here where I live at but I am not sure.

Flint is basically chert concretions formed in sedimentary rock (i.e. lime stone).
Chert is just about everything else.

At least in Sweden flint is considered 'higher quality' for knapping stuff. Hence the differentiation, I suppose?

Well I was wondering on the skunk if it is only found here and saw some from Ala I am only an hour from Ala so I guess they have it there also. Theirs was not as white but kinda pinkish to off white. I have a few artifacts made from it. It is truly nice when it shows in the artifacts.

Must be all flint I find here. Mostly a white color. The bedrock is all lime stone. Years ago my father traveled a couple hours away to Flint Ridge just east of Columbus and brought back flint with lots of colors. There has been artifacts found around here that are said to be made of chert. I never new what the difference was. Thanks!
