I recovered this today. It is a 1-piece marked "CHATWIN & SON /(dot) BIRMINGHAM (dot)" The front, well, that is what I need help with. Can anyone make anything out of what is left? :icon_scratch::icon_scratch: Birmingham 01.JPGBirmingham 02.JPG

I found it east of Richmond.

Does the backmark says "Son" or Sons"? The difference is important for time-dating it. Chatwin was in business as a button-maker in Birmingham Englans, dating from 1823 into the 1860s... but "Sons" (plural) wasn't part of the company's name until 1850.

I've never seen a pre-20th-century 1-piece Military button with a raised rim around its back side, which yours has... so I think it must be a civilian-clothing button, therefore with some type of Civilian emblem on it.

I can only make out "Chat" and "IRMINGH". The front is very toasted (as are so many of the buttons I've pulled from this field).
