Hi all . Last year research led me to a very old site . It was as usual a steep hike to the cellar and it took me a while to find . I figured I was in the neighborhood when I ran into a series of walls. The site itself is unusual in that the homesite is right on the side of the mountain with the ground sloping sharply both in front and back of the site . The hole isn't really a hole at all but must have been a shallow cellar because of its location and the fact the ground is very rocky.Anyway I detected around the cellar , and while I knew it was undetected I got very few signals and left with a few buttons. Well leap forward to yesterday I had a few free hours Max was bored so we took a hike to check out a hunch I had. The hike up is daunting ; only a half mile from my truck but straight uphill bushwacking ( which was one reason I never went back). My hunch was that the cellar being on the hill and the hill being so steep in front of the house maybe stuff was washed downhill? My theory was supported by the fact was that what have been the front yard was dirt and boulders ... not even many leaves . So I followed the wash outs and my pictures will tell the rest of the story. Nothing great but a plethora of very old flat and pewter buttons and a toasted draped bust. But I do need help on the pewter button with the lettering on it..anyone got an ID on it. The lettering seems to be Latin(?) with a staff or torch in the middle . I have shown the front and back any help would be appreciated. Take care

Awesome find! Try this:
Take a small flashlight and shine it on the button-not directly overhead but at an angle. Take several pictures WITHOUT the flash, with the flashlight at different angles, then post the best one. This is a good way to accentuate the lettering and design using shadows and light.

Thanks that exactly what I did and it looks better in my add -on post.

Thats a sweet button right there. My banner vote is going in. Congrats!

Rev War? Can you get a good pic and in focus?

Please look back on this thread for Iron Patch's ID on this button. I also put up another thread on Today"s Find's with a better close up pic. Thanks for looking.

That's a lot of "roundness" there. Great job, and I really like that button!

Excellent job on working that hillside and great thinking about the erosion washing things down. That button is fantastic man. It sounds like a site that is totally worth the effort to keep at it.

Ray! Just had a chance to look at it. Nice ID....IP.... Really Rare button. I vote Banner on this one! Never seen one posted! Had to look in the Troiano book. CONGRATULATIONS! I'll get a hold of you tonight Hogge

Its cool, but would be cooler if you explained what it was?

Sorry please look at my thread from the 18th on my hunt; "Cellar...... lettered pewter button" . The pic I took for the thread was not great so I got this one. Iron Patch ID'd it as rev war button. His reply was the 3rd or 4th in my thread.

Don't take this the wrong way but its hard to follow broken threads. Next time my suggestion is to amend your original post, which I found eventually. Add the photos to the first post by 'edit post', then 'Go Advanced'. I then after saving, add a new reply at the bottom stating I've updated the first thread. Makes life easier for us all.
Sorry if this is suck eggs, but its meant to help.

PS. I knew it was a great button to begin with, but seeing the original post, I now understand the history & why it is.
