Cell phones and Tigers! Oh My!
Howdy everyone! I trust you've all been well, and have got out to do some detecting of your own recently. I finally got back out this weekend. Same old story.. between work and the weather I've not had much opportunity to get out, but I keep trying. This weekend I *DID* get out however. At a park here in Lexington Kentucky that hosts a weekly free movie showing on Friday nights during the summer. Free Friday Flicks, sponsored by a local television station and several businesses here in town. This past Friday's viewing was threatened by severe thunderstorms, par for the week, but the weather remained calm, so the movie was shown, and lots of people showed up to see it. I showed up too.. the next morning! Bright and early. Bright this week as it was not foggy like the last time I was out here at this sight.. no misty morning this weekend.
Oh it was wet though, despite no rain or fog.. the morning dew did a number on the grass, and my socks and shoes, and my knees and knee pads. Oh.. and it got hot! HUMID AND HOT! And this is at daybreak people! By 8:30 in the morning I was soaked.. wet from the knees down from the dew on the grass, and from the waist up from perspiration. It may have been still under 86 degrees Fahrenheit, but the relative humidity made it feel more like 96 plus! But what can I say, I work full time in a factory, and that's still cool compared to my work place! <grin>
The finds were there to be made though.. all kinds of finds. The usual suspects of course, can slaw, pull tabs and the like..
There were all the kinds of things you might find at a site where a large group of people have gathered..
Pens, crayons, sunglasses...
Buttons and zipper pulls, hair clasps..
Toy cars... Other toys?
Tigers in the Grass! Oh My! and..?..Wrestlers?.. I wonder which one of them pulled the arm off the other guy (toy) ? ? ? Maybe I don't even want to know.. <shuddering>
Oh there was some bling too.. but a lot of surprising finds were dug up.. not just laying around on the grass as you might think they would be found.. One was a cool if somewhat nostalgic, to me anyway, neckerchief slide for a boy scout.. or WEBLO perhaps.
I didn't find any cigarette lighters this week, disposable or otherwise.. but I did dig up a decorative sleeve or case (cover) for one..
I also dug up a broken wrist watch.. Levi Strauss brand.. didn't know Levi's made watches too..<grin> Oh there were surface finds.. besides some coins.. there were other things a little more techy... a cool magnetic based (with a fold out hanger hook) LED light.. a memory chip.. 1 gigabyte! Cool.. and the remains or half of a cell phone.. perhaps they couldn't "Hear Me Now." <laughing>
Oh, but it gets better.. as I was detecting my way up the "movie hill" sweeping from one side to the other and back again, I spied another fellow detecting at the top of the hill. Now this isn't the first time I've run into other detectorists out here at this park, but we are usually passing one another coming and going rather than both detecting at the same time. I was pleased to see that this gentleman was being both courteous and being conscientious. In other words, he was filling in the holes he was digging, as a good metal detectorists should do. Too many times I've followed along behind others who weren't so thoughtful or caring. <rolling eyes> We've all come across them from time to time I'm sure. Anyway, this guy was not one of the latter. Using a Garret 500 and sweating nearly as much as I was, the gentleman walked down the hill a bit and introduced himself as I got near the top of the hill myself. I learned that Brian has been detecting for a few more years than I have, but had not been out doing much for the past couple of years or so.. but was feeling the need to do some detecting again. <smile> We shared our finds for the morning and talked a bit, exchanged cards then parted ways.. he was off to get on hit his day, and I was going to finish detecting to the top of the hill before I moved on.
As I neared the top of the hill I was approached by a man with his wife and child in tow.. he asked me if I had happened to have found a cell phone on the hill this morning. I had to disappoint him however, as the only one I had found was a partial cell phone, and it wasn't his. I did tell them I'd keep my eyes open for it though. Ah, but it was not to be. By the time I reached the top of the hill the heat of the day was building and I was ready to retreat towards home and my "Man Cave".. Ahh.. the cool basement and airconditioning.... well uncomfortably cold when your socked feet are wet.. I changed my socks and got comfortable. That is.. till my darling wife got home from her morning errands. Little did I know I would be out and about running all over town for most of the rest of the day.. *sigh* Weekends! When EVERYTHING PUT OFF DURING THE WEEK MUST BE DONE! Including mowing the yard, grocery shopping.. etc etc.
Well, by the time I finished up the chores and chauffeuring I kind of put aside going through all the finds from that morning's outting at the movie hill. Besides, I thought I might go back again in the morning.. THIS morning.. Sunday. Well.. it wasn't to happen.. I slept in too late, I thought. So, I made breakfast instead.. sausage gravy and biscuts.. but that's another story all together Anyway, after an enjoyable breakfast with my wife, then reading the Sunday paper.. we both decided that a Sunday morning extension (sleep) was in order. Waking up a few hours later.. WHAT A NAP! The day was already half over and we were still in our bed clothes! Well it was such a pretty day out that I talked my wife into going to the park with me. So that's how I ended up back on the movie hill this afternoon.. still digging up coins from under the grass.. and pull tabs and other scrap and crap. .. And finding yet another cell phone!
Over in the grass in the parking area.. the phone still worked.. so I found a number to contact in the case of an emergency.. the owner's wife.. the same guy that had asked me if I had found a phone the day before. What are the odds? Anyway, the lady I spoke with was ecstatic that I had found the phone and had contacted them. I told them that my wife and I were in the park at that time and she told me they lived just a few minutes away and would be delighted to meet us there (at the park) to retrieve their phone. And so we did. I handed over the phone to its rightfull owners along with one of my cards.. hey.. never know when someone might need a metal detectorist.. right? I declined an offer of some cash as a reward for returning the phone however. I told them that I did this for fun, not proffit.. just "pay it forward" as the saying goes.. <smile>
And so ended the this weekends adventures in metal detecting.. well.. aside from actually going through my finds bag, sorting, taking pictures and making this post.. Oh.. and doing the happy dance..
Yes.. Happy Dance.. I did find some silver.. a BIG SILVER COIN... Saturday.. I neglected to the the happy dance out of embarrassment.. there was a crew there setting up tents and inflatable (bouncy) children's' rides for an annual picnic for some organization or another to be held that afternoon. But I did it today.. the dance that is.. <grin> my wife was amused.
The clad total wasn't too shabby either..
That was more than enough to pay for gas for both days, and batteries too! <smile> You gotta love a hobby that pays you to have fun!
I hope the rest of you did get out and enjoy the weekend.. or if not, that you do soon. And, as always..
