South Tucson in the dark after copper thefts

SOUTH TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Ongoing copper theft in South Tucson has left nearly ten city blocks in the dark. Until funding for new street lighting becomes available residents in the small, South-side community have increased concerns about their safety.

Daniel Gutierrez likes to walk his dogs every day in South Tucson.

One because he works at night and doesn't want to have to do so when he gets home -- and two because South Tucson is so darn dark at night.

"Those lights over there and right here," Gutierrez says, pointing to the street lamps on South Fourth Avenue. "Those haven't worked for about one year."

If you're wondering why it's because the electrical wiring in so many South Tucson street lights looks like this: snipped and stolen by copper thieves.

At one point, up to ten city blocks in South Tucson were completely in the dark.

It's gotten so bad, a lot of parents no longer allow their kids outside at night.

They ought to hang and then shoot scrap thieves while they are hanging, with their families watching.

Scrap thieves are the lowest form of the scum on earth.

Scrap thieves broke into a house I own, and cut the cords on my appliances. It cost me $32 for a new vacuum cord so they could get 2.00 worth of copper. I spent three hours wiring another appliance so they could steal 50 cents in copper.

In Indianapolis, thieves cut the copper out of a food bank's cooler lines, ruining $100,000 worth of orange juice that Kroger had donated to feed the hungry.

Those people are SCUM!!!!

Just saw on our local news channel, that they caught a guy, that stoled more than a $1000 worth of copper from A/C units outside of Churches. The funny thing was that he got caught for the same crime last year. :icon_scratch:
I just heard, 2nd hand, that cops found a fried body out in the desert. (southern california desert somewhere between L.A. and Las Vegas) He was stealing wire at a sub-station and decided he liked extra-crispy. ;D ;D

One less for the gene pool.

We had a call in S. Phoenix awhile back where two transients had cut a fence & broke through a chain link gate to get at one of our transformers. Ended up one of them staggered into a circle K with burns up the side of his body from the shins up. He asked if they could call medics for his friend. His friend was laying next to the cabinet. He ended up having both hands amputated, partial vision in one eye plus the expected scarring. I got the evil eye from most everyone in the security dept when the only thing I could say was "Well, at least he won't be stealing any more copper." Idiots don't think about the voltages & amps involved, or how much voltage is running through the grounds in a sub station.

A couple of months back 2 guys were busted here for stealing 100 yards of guardrail. Their pleas of innocence fell on deaf ears when their pockets were emptied. Seems one of the guys was saving the nuts.

I think the scrap yards need to be held accountable as accomplices.

Just one more to add to the copper thieves, here in Austin, about a year ago this old hispanic gentlemen climbed over a 8 foot ,barbwired fence to get to copper that the local power company owns. While digging around and cutting wires,he must have cut thru a "Live" wire that shocked him, threw his body about 50 feet next to a wooden pole of some sort, that caught on fire from his clothes catching on fire. When the power company found him a few hours later,he was burned to a crisp, they thought it was a deer that jumped the fence, but soon realized that it was a person. The really bad thing is that there is warning signs in both English and Spanish, but his daughter said that he didn't know how to read and now she's suing the city. :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

Ahh, the lawsuit will more than likely get dumped before it even hits the calendar. In the words of my favorite judge to testify before "Sir, ignorance is no excuse in my court".

One night I was checking on something we saw on the cameras in a sub. Turned out it was a cat. 5 minutes after I got there We got a call from MDH that they had a bump just as I came around the other side of the sub, I saw a big flash. The cat had gotten on top of a transformer & the back half of him was literally vaporized. Guess that's why all the T men, linemen & overhead construction guys wear fire retardant clothes. :icon_thumleft: ;D ;D

Thats why the united states is in the trouble we are in now. Because we arent allowed to hurt other peoples feelings, or keep score because the young people cant have their feelings hurt over a loss. And the word he used isnt even the word the admin thinks it is!!!!!!!! I guess the admin voted for hope and change also!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, it's just like being at work........ One of the ladies from HR heard us calling one of the theives a wet back, and had a tizzy fit. Memos were sent to all security dept personnel that wet back was derogatory & hurtful. Well, we fixed that! We started calling them Julios! Problem solved it wasn't in the guidelines for being a BAD word, and she wasn't sure if it was derogatory or not. Needless to say she was not allowed back into the security dept. again and we made her jump through ALL the hoops dot ALL the I's and have perfect paperwork when she needed anything from security. Worked great since her job depended on us providing access, background checks, new employee badges etc etc. She got layed off, so we never got to fond out if she smartened up enough to learn not to eavesdrop & if you do, DON'T broadcast it all over you're an eavesdropper!

Auto word filter. The computer doesn't know the context when it sees the letters assembled.

fire r e t a r d e n t * pc nanny auto bot "possibly offensive" word filter programs only read word strings --so if a honest non offensive word happens to have a "string" of letters that can be a "offensive" word guess what ?--yep deleted -- happily the programs a M O R O N -- it only sees strings of letters as words --break it up with spacing and it sees nothing -- please note I tell you this this is not to be used to cuss (which can get you banned)- but only to spell honest words without nanny bot issues.

Why? Are they out there stealing it? You do understand there is guardrail owned by private businesses, and the government does auction it off as surplus. So how can the scrapyard know if the material is stolen. Maybe you should be held accountable as well since you scrap too.

You're kidding, right?

I now here on my property in Pa. rt 191 when the replaced all the cable guard rails with standard ones they just tossed all that 1" cable and posts over the bank it is still there and when there are accidents and they come out to replace sections with new they toss the old pieces over the bank on my property. I should have them fined for littering. Not sure if it is Penndot or sub contracted out.

At the comm co. where I work, someone jumped the fence into the cable yard and with a hacksaw, cut some up into 3-4 foot sections. Later, someone in the city created huge clouds of black smoke, burning the plastic off of it. Police went to investigate, brought our engineer out to ID the stolen property.
Funny thing is, telecom cable looks copper, but it's mostly steel alloy. Not very valuble as scrap.
