Any help would be appreciated. I can't find anything comparable. It appears to be cast brass, it stands 4 5/8" tall, 3 3/4" at it's widest, a 2 1/2" diameter base and almost 3" opening at the top. It weighs 16.6 ounces. It's pretty beat up and dented. Has a few markings on it, one around the rim which may or may not be an Islamic date(?), not sure. I tried to get good photos but my main camera broke on me so this is it...

Looks like the top finial of a brass bed post.

I'll give you a E for effort anyways. [emoji4]

Number one its too thick and bottom heavy.
Number two why the medallion?

Number three why the other markings on the rim?

Number four if it were a finial then why wouldnt the script be upside down as the "finial" would be in its normal state?

Number five its crudely cast brass. Haven't researched that but I highly doubt there are many crude cast brass bed post finials.

Number six it does not resemble any brass bed finial I have looked at. 95 out of 100 of those are machined brass, thin and comprised of more than 1 piece.
Perhaps you can show me what you are talking about?

While yours probably isn't one it sure does look like one. Take a look at some of these: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1...j2.2.0....0...1..64.psy-ab..0.0.0.OY90Fp-Qeus

I thought cast because under magnification it has many voids and foreign material bits here and there and the horizontal lines appear as part of the casting. That being said im no expert.

I think hammered because of the lines on the outside are not on the raised mid line that touches the round raised portion with the letters. The lines from hammering on the outside are likely from using a raising hammer on the outside around the circle around with the curve of the medallion. Also the one picture shows round indentations on the inside which to me indicate hammer marks.

Spittoon. For tobacco chewers.

Its missing the top rim. That part is made like the end of a trumpet. Look up Spittoon on line. Not 100% sure but it looks similar.

It might be to small for a Spittoon.

The writing in the circle looks like Hindi (according to my son who said "South Asian"). The rim writing looks like a different language. iknowmyabc-trace-learn-writing-hindi-alphabet-vowel-and-number-workbook-by-i-know-my-abc-colo...webp

Maybe it was cast then hammered? I see what your saying about the little round indentations on inside. The piece does have many actual dents in it though, as well as the mouth being bent out of round.

Unless it's a personal one, but east Indian? They chew Paan it looks like, lol. Click the link scroll down a little and you'll see why I'm laughing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paan
They don't look like the type to use a spitoon, just sayin. :laughing7:
The thought did cross my mind though, for the simple fact that I can't find another "thing" that looks like this.

Got a University close by? Maybe someone in the language dept. can help you decipher the markings.
