That looks very interesting ! I think it might be some sort of Indian good luck charm . The bottom markings may represent the sun with those 4 ''rays'' coming from the center hole . The 4 "rays" and the other 4 smaller marks could also represent the 4 "directions" (north , south , east , and west) or the 4 seasons (summer , fall ,winter ,spring ) The sun was considered a very good thing , most Indian sun symbols I've seen usually have 4 "rays" coming from a circle or a central point. The dude seems to be wearing a headband , which I think Indians wore alot . I don't have any idea what those funny letters are .
you should put it in your pocket and go buy a lottery ticket ! Good Luck !

Thank you for the info - i wil try e-mailing as you had suggested. I had thought it to be an indian rock too but the lettering threw me. My sister thinks it is a depiction of Jesus. Any throughts??

once you find out the language used on it you will be able to put a near date to it....most likely american indian......most colleges have a history professor that usually are happy to help as they would like to see the artifact, as what it is, and where it originated from, and from whom, may add a little info to their teachings..........i have used these professors to date or verify several items, at no charge every time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,gldhntr

Thanks - I am in the middle of Kansas (or no where) and have sent pictures to KU but they haven't gotten back to me. I've also sent pictures to some of the appraisers from PBS Antiques Road Show and some other people from other American Indian sites and so far they have replied that it is not African, Pre-Columbian, Oceanic or American Indian. I am so stumped. Like I said earlier, my Dad has passed away and I am trying to settle his estate. My Sister wants the rock and my brother thinks it is worth quite a bit of money and wants to have her buy it from the estate. Ain't family grand sometimes. Thank you for your input.

I don't think it's that old. Indian art used more symbolism than actual facial details. A typical Indian concept of a man would be something you would recognize as a person but not necessarily a lot of facial details or a specific person.. This looks something 50ish to me, someone with a little artistic talent "doodling" on a rock so to speak. I'm no expert but it's the impression I get from looking at it. JIM

A childs toy????

Could it have anything to do with a "spinning top"

The top would have a piece of wood through the center, you wrap the string around the top and hold the actual top of the top with the rock, placing the wood in the hole.

Just a thought.

I don't usually post on this forum but I have to go along with Jimmileo, If this item was found in a creek it would not look so new,it would be worn from water moving over it.the letters are too sharp, as is the face ,no wear whatsoever. Just my opinion.H.H.Bob

Thank you for your help. I don't know why they would make up a story though. I have searched and have gotten replies that it looks somewhat like a fetish stone or maybe from the Hopewell culture who have burial mounds in Nebraska. It maybe isn't so old though - I honestly have no idea but appreciate everyones input. I am still waiting on a reply from KU.

That would depend on how long it was in the water wouldn't it????

I am not sure if it was in the water or mud or dirt. who knows when it comes to boys - my little one loves to dig in the dirt. It maybe wasn't in the water that long - does anyone know about the lettering? I did send a letter to "hawkeye" but he doesn't reply by email - he doesn't want anything in writing I guess. He did email me back and said to send me pictures and he would call me. Thanks again for all you all's help.

I think the key to decoding it is the S with the slash through it. As far as I can see, it is on the rock at least 3 times. That means whatever language it is written in, that was a common word or sound. I would hit google hard for any written languages, then compare with what you have.
Also, I would think that it might be American Indian, but, the picture looks to be a friar or monk to me. Could be a really old find, but the biggest concern of mine is what everyone else pointed out. Its in too good a shape. Even if it wasn't in water, the paint should have faded or worn off by now I would think.

At any rate, good luck with it.

Your replies are fantastic !! I am new to this spot but am really loving everyones opinion. It can't be from the 60's because it has been in the family since 1910-1930. Also, it isn't painted, that is the color of the rock and it is all carved in. If you look at the back of the rock (sun dial) you will see the light color. that is what the face is made of. it isn't paint. I think the "s" or the language is the key! THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT!!!!

The first thing that came to mind when i first opened this thread and saw the picture and without reading anything, was chinese railroad workers building the transcontinental railroad in the mid to late 1800's. Maybe it was a game piece. I know, probably way off base, but i swear i've seen simular stones, maybe on an old episode of kung fu . LOL or some place. I'm just so sure thats what it is from, don't ask me why.
