I found this piece at the same place where I found the US plate,my husband found his breast plate, and we have found other CW and later period pieces. This is definitely lead, definitely acorn shaped but doesn't quite have the oxidization on it that A Civil War bullet would have but very close. On the top of it looks a little rusty almost like a wee bit of iron might have been in the very center.

I have seen CW bullets carved into acorns. Not saying yours is not, but the wire through the center makes me think it is a watch fob.

But I have dug a couple of them with a square nail rammed up to the nose of the bullet. It does somewhat look altered but I am not sure it is carved. That is one of those items I would like to hold in my hand to see what I think.

Lead plumb bob, the iron through the middle was for the cord attachment.:happy11:

Here's another picture that really has me shaking my head. I got out my set of calipers and measured this object and here is what I found compared to a .58 caliper three ringer. The object is .92 tall compared to .89 for the three ringer. The middle of the object was exactly . 58 and where it comes to the point is .31. I almost wonder if a bullet could have been inverted and then molten lead added to form the acorn top and carved a bit while it was still warm. You can see that this almost looks two piece.

Okay I Googled plumb bob and you might be right SS,the iron at the top may have broken off. It does look though like this was in the making of something more ornate. Watch fob? Not sure DC Matt,it would be awfully heavy. I do know that Quindy of the Tennessee Trio dug a carved acorn( its one of his banner finds),his was authenticated as clearly a bullet. Here's the link to his.
