Wow ! What a way to end the day. After 9 hours at work I had an invitation to hunt with KL and his son at an old hotel. We were comparing machines to see how each would respond to targets in the ground. All three of us got a Wheaties, K's was a 1910 the coins were in amazing condition, he also scored a Merc. Shortly before time to leave he wondered where they would have watered the horses. So we headed to the stream. That is where I got lucky, knowing the machine helps and dug this Carolus IIII coin at around 5 inches. It's a bit bigger than a quarter, 2 Reale ? The date is 1800. There is good detail on the coin. Best pics I could get without natural light. Would anyone be able to tell me a good way to clean it up a bit ? I'm not use to finding old Silver, just old Copper  Major Thanks Keith  Happy Hunting, BB

Most Silver comes out of the ground real nice. I have noticed however with this coin and a few others I have dug that Urine either from horses, cows or even dogs in the case of a merc dime I found can cause a nasty type of white/grey patina that damages the silver a bit.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and cleaning tips

Re: Carolus was Lost

This evening we had a fantastic hunt... capped by Bob's find of the day! :hello2: It looks like it is starting to clean up real well! Congrats Bob!

Re: Carolus was Lost

Looks like you have a silver Spanish 2 Reales there.

Congrats on that find!

Re: Carolus was Lost

Nice 2 Reales!

For cleaning silver coins, I soak the coin overnight in a solution of 75% distilled water and 25% household white vinegar. After treatment, rinse in water. I would be careful with brushing the coin, as brushing loose deposits around the coin surface can scratch the coin. I only use this method to remove ground deposits, as it will remove tarnish/patina as well.

Do NOT use silver polish of any kind. That is a sure-fire way to ruin your coin.

Great, great find. :headbang: I'll bet that that was a sad day at the home of the person who lost that coin.
Little did he know the joy it would bring to someone over 200 years later.
Way to "think like our forefathers." Keep doing that, and you will have a very, very nice collection.

Re: Carolus was Lost

Your coin is rarer than many others of this type.
It was minted in Guatemala "NG"=Nueva Guatemala:

Mintmark-G or NG. The mint opened in 1733. The mint produced a hand cut pillar type coin (1733-1753) very similar to the later milled pillar coin but irregular in shape like a conventional cob. Minted next was the milled pillar - (1754-1771) followed by the milled bust - (1773-1817)--like yours.

Here's one that sold in April 2009 (in MS-63) for $700.00!!

You found a great coin. Congrats!

Carolus of course is latin for Charles or in this case Carlos the fourth. Great find...Kane23

Re: Carolus was Lost

Great looking coin

I use a number of different ways when cleaning Silver coins :read2:

Lemon juice.

Genolite.

Silver foil and spit :icon_sunny:

Here is the Roman Silver which made the Banner, as dug and cleaned, using these methods

Nice 1800 Kieth

Wish it was me... but it was Bob who found this superb find! I had the joy of hearing him shout those wonderful words "Spanish Silver!" and the joy of seeing the smile on his face! ;D

We need to go back - as it was getting dark there wasn't time to do anything else in the area other than double check the hole for a pocket spill... you can bet we will hit that area again! :icon_thumright:

Now if there is only a way to ensure that its my turn next time... :laughing7:

Beautiful Silva!!! Excellent find! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: Hogge

Wow, what a fantastic coin. Way to go Don on spotting the mintmark. I am so used to seeing the M on all of those I have found that I dont even look anymore.

That coin looks great like it is, and with a value like that I wouldn't touch it. If the temptation is too great I would recommend electrolysis. I have used it on dozens of silver coins and the results are amazing. If you want to try it send me a shout and ill walk you through building a small set. Or we could meet up and Ill give it a cleanin for you.
