Howdy folks,
Got out for the first time in about a week today. Went up the nearby canyon along a hiking trail. Was hoping to get some water hunting in since I'm falling behind on my gold goal for the year. Unfortunately the swimming holes I wanted to hit were covered in ice and snow. I'd brought a wet-suit expecting cold water, but I'm not going under ice . Ah well, the jewelry will wait til summer. I'm pretty sure this spot has never been hit. Its about 1.5 mile uphill hike from the parking lot and is super popular with the local kids and adults during our few months of warm weather. I scouted the edges of it a year or two ago and loaded up on shallow coins. Gonna have to wait another month or two for the ice to thaw, then I can get in the water.
Anywho, back to today. On the way up I stopped on a sagebrush flat overlooking the waterfalls and bam, hit this bullet. There's no rifling so its dropped and I don't see any evidence of crimping for a metallic cartridge. I know the common Civil War bullets and this seems close, but its the wrong caliber (.50) and the base is solid. We had a lot of mining activity in the area in the late 1860s and 1870s. There were also a few forts nearby to watch over the Native populations about the same time period. I'm assuming one of these fellows took a walk to see the falls and dropped this round. If anyone can give me an ID for this, it would be much appreciated. I can provide more photos if needed.
On the way back down I hit this small sterling silver ring. Brings my silver count to 30 FTY! Does anyone know the hallmark?
Also, got these on my previous hunt from last week. Silver 28 and 29 for the year. Gave the lot to the property owner and it sounds like I'm welcome back. I've probably hit about 15% of the yard for this 1920's house. The train smashed penny is a first for me.
Thanks for looking!
