I believe this canteen is a CW one. Beore he died, my grandfather gave it to me with the story that it was dug by some men doing construction work in Petersburg when he was a boy. My questions are, is it authentic? Is it valuable? Is this a Union piece? How should I store it to try to preserve the felt that is left?

It's difficult to find an exact match to it, but it looks like there was a lot of variety. Mine has grey felt or wool that has a lot of rust stains and is pretty fragile. It's folded over in one place and I think if I tried to fold it back into position it would fall to pieces. I can't see any manufacturer's mark on the spout. The spout looks like it's pewter. Wish I had the strap and original cork. Thanks guys. How do people store these kinds of items?

Kuger..You are right about that. Cover's different, that's all.

For sure store it in a dry place away from light (which will over time damage the fabric that is left). You may want to talk with someone about any conservations steps that should be taken.

That is one Fantastic keepsake!
