Can't compain about a day when you are digging good relics from both wars ..........

Yesterday was a gorgeous day with temperatures in the high 60's in southeastern Virginia. We've had steady rains the last few weeks and water is pooling just about everywhere........in all the low lying areas as well as some areas that are normally dry. This made for some wet soil conditions and several of the holes I dug filled with water as soon as I got down just a couple of inches. I couldn't believe it but I saw 2 snakes.......a baby King snake and a 6 ft plus Black snake. Mind you these were just the ones I saw. I can't believe snakes are already out and it is only the beginning of March. I'll be glad when it dries out a little but the moist ground condition is awesome for finding musket and minnie balls. My Nautilus loves this condition for lead. Anyway I'll let the pictures do the talking. I did score a beautiful complete shoe buckle lost by a Continental soldier. Also found a beautiful Jefferson Davis Hatptin (my second from this site). When I found it it was folded over but when I got home I gently uncrimped it and it is perfect now except for the crease! The funny thing is I put a Jefferson Davis Hatpin as my cover picture on Facebook that morning and then I go and dig one! I might have to start putting a different relic up each day I go if that is how it is going to work! LOL I also got a beautiful coat staff Massachusetts Volunteer Militia button, a complete scabbard tip, an underplug to a Boremann fused cannonball, an eagle button back, a few dropped 58's, a Gardner, a Enfield with boxwood plug intact, a few musket balls and buckshot, and lots of caseshot. I also went back to the corner of the piece of property where I found my pit with bottles and pulled out a few more broken ones. One is a soda bottle with a beautiful eagle on it and Balto below it. Its broken like 95 percent of all the bottles in this pit. Its gonna take me some time to dig this out as it is wide and deep with large roots crisscrossing it. I'm holding back some of the relics that have come out of this pit to showcase in a later post when I have completed digging it. I think everyone will like what they see. Anyway here are the pics. Hope everyone enjoys seeing them as much as I enjoyed digging them. Devonrex

Some more pics of the cleaned relics . The circular brass piece turned out to be a Revolutionary War shot measurer. My first and pretty cool at that! Devonrex

Awesome finds. The hat pin and Mass button turned out great and to find a complete shoe buckle like that is hard to do. I can't wait to see your pit finds!

Hey Buckleboy, the powder flask top is early but not from the Rev War......... I've been told it dates from the early 1800's to about 1830 after getting feedback from a number of different collectors. I had found it 10 ft from the colonial shoebuckle so I had presumed it was from the same time frame. It is the first of these that I have ever found. So many experts out there proclaim to know everything. They are the ones who really know little at all! After all these years of digging I am still learning new things. That's what makes this hobby so great! You just never know what you are going to dig up and the research that follows is just as exciting as the actual find. The actual flask was probably made of leather.
