Found this today at a farmhouse built in 1900. It's very heavy for its size. Appears to be completely spherical. I know I'll have to wait to measure with calipers to know which type but do you all think cannonball/ projectile ? Found at about 8-9 inches deep ring at solid high 40s on at pro

Looks like canister/grape shot. Can you see any seam line on it?

Is there any history of cannons near the house?

I can't see a seem because there's just too much corrosion. And I am not sure if there has been cannons there. The homeowner died so there's no one to ask.

I can't think of what else it could be.

They turn up in odd places. We got one over here (similar size) in the back garden of a large farm house. No Civil War activity in the area & I can't see that you need a cannon near by to find a cannonball.

Would certainly say it is a piece of canister shot. I have dug a few myself. They are the shotgun pellet of cannons. If you look over a big enough area I would wager you will find more!

You should be able to find out if there was ever artillery within firing range of your house without having to talk to a past homeowner. Did civil war or REV war fighting happen near your house?Round steel and iron balls have been used for years and years for thousands of different things. I hope it is a cannon ball I'm not trying to be a downer you just have to ask yourself why grape shot would be there
