We recently dug up our pasture to bury some debri . While filling the hole back in I found this "cannonball" I took it to the closest museum to me and they weren't sure how to authenticate it, as its a small town and there not well educated as some bigger towns may be. So that lead me here this weighs exactly 8 lb 13.2 ounces and is 4 1/8" wide. Since my research for Dunkirk OH shows no military activity in the area im assuming it is probably not real but hey one never knows.

The British had a 9-4 which is a 9 LB 4 inch ball...

I suspect it may be a foreign and/or pre-1860 ball.

According to the shot table it's not an American cannon ball. Cannon bore, shot, and shell diameters for smoothbore guns

Cannon balls were exact in weight and diameter. The way the flashing was ground off on your find is also something that bothers me, cannon balls have to fit the bore of the gun without any chance of jamming.

I have to ask
It looks like it has a plug - no?
Where is cannonballguy?
Not sure I would mess with this ball until you have a good ID

Yes it has what looks to be a "plug" I was assuming that was part of the casing... This item is no longer in my house and is out in an old shed just in case.

The plug makes me think it's a sports shotput. An explosive ball would have a fuse or fuse hole, not a sealed plug like that. Msg CannonballGuy about this one... the weight and diameter seem close for a British solid ball, but my knowledge is more in the WW1 onward projectiles...
