I am new here. I have found what might appear to be a cannon ball. It is between 5.1" and 5.2" in diameter depending where it is measured. It was rusted and pitted from being in the ground. I cleaned it up a little. It weighs 19.2 lbs. It has a large #2 cast in the ball. I live in civil war country. Sherman's army passed through here on his march to the sea.

A quick search reveals that shot put are 6-16 pounds for men. 8.8 pounds for women.

Well...... heh..... my question to you is ...
Are 2 cannon people not enough to simply put this to rest ? ? ?

I will second what CBG stated and go to the absolute final fact...and re-state ...
NOT a cannonball.

Just don't want anyone's hopes to get up... and i should not have beat around the bush to begin with.
I don't do too many solves anymore... and have stepped aside on this.
But.... this one you can mark as DOUBLE solved. heh
Where did I say it was a cannonball? It's clearly not a cannonball and I never even suggested that it might be. I was responding to the post that said they were certain it was a ball from a prisoner ball and chain. While it very well could be and matches the ebay item, I have seen way too many ebay items that were not what they purported to be. I always try to find supporting evidence rather than rely on an ebay identification alone. In my opinion it is most likely a gate closer counterweight.

Well we could go even further and deduce that the likelihood of it being a REAL ball and chain is nil as well.
Novelty piece IMO.

Yep, that's my point, I don't think it is. I think it's one of these.

With that picture to support the theory, you make a very compelling argument.
