Hello All, Work has been crazy, but we finally got out today to do some Louisiana Diggin! The first cane row I was on had a nice silver Catholic medallion in it. Then we did a couple rows without much significant turning up. All of a sudden, I hear Shanegalang yelling that he's got a copper. I came over to see a Braided Hair LC in his hand. :headbang: 185? LC. :) A row or two later, I got a sweet 1842-O Seated Half Dime with a square nail hole in it. Gives it a lot of character. :) And not a bad looking coin, to boot. Then I dug another Catholic medallion. I'd love to dig a St. Anthony medallion sometime. (patron saint of Lost Items!) 8-) Anyhow, I also got an excellent silver thimble. Then Shanegalang dug a plantation token. Says "COMMISSARY/BOHNE/CHECK" on it. Would love some help with the ID if anyone knows anything... I also got a Jr. Deputy Sheriff badge, which is a cool find. Anyhow, it's nice to be back with some old coins and silver at a new site we've discovered. It is a mixed site, with some modern trash, but as long as the old coins are coming up we're happy! We're overdue for a good military button, so fingers crossed! Enjoy the video and photos below:

I like how the medallion's loop had broken (photo below), and someone had punched a new hole in it to keep on wearing it. Such a personal item, and that adds another layer of meaning to the find. The LC is 185? The ground down here ain't kind to copper. :( But its MUCH rarer to dig a copper than Seated or Spanish Silver. We've probably dug close to 100 Seated/Capped/Spanish silvers in 2 years down here--and this is only the 5th or 6th LC to be dug.

Shanegalang dug this tiny, interesting heart. Some sort of jewelry, but a neat find!

Really great finds, almost makes me jealous. (lol) Since I know very little about old coins, especially coppers, I'm probably sticking my neck out here, but, I have a 36" monitor, which gives me an extreme close-up of items posted. That being said, It looks to me like the date is 186-. I can't really make out the final number, but it does appear to have a rounded bottom. Unfortunately, that leaves 4 numbers to choose from. Sorry Buck, I'm not trying to contradict you, just hoping to help a little. Incidentally, your posts are always so interesting, I try to catch every one you make. Thanks for the enjoyment the "Cane Bandits" bring to the forum. EagleDown

Nice scores BB ! I know ya'll will have a REALE good year

After digging over two dozen reales last year, we haven't dug one yet this year. Part of this is the age of the sites we're digging roughly CW era. Gotta get those 1830s and earlier sites to get the reales!

Cheers,

Buck

Another great hunt guys! Glad to see Shane pull out an old copper and that token is great. Congrats on the silver, I really like that thimble and the Half Dime is Awesome! :icon_thumright:

Yes, it is unusual to get them in silver. Most I dig are aluminum. But I have a few that are silver. I think we've dug close to two dozen catholic medallions down here.
I dug a lot made of copper and some from aluminum. Never a silver one! I hope you get many more!

Nice group of finds Buck, I really like the silver thimble, very rare around these parts.

Hey Buck, Love that coin with the square hole. Nice stuff as usual and very interesting about the lack of old coppers. Seems to be most of what I've found here in Maine. Only got out a couple days during end of January thaw and dug three LCs. One was in decent shape but the ground here is not too kind either, at least in most places. I'm always blown away when I see the beautiful condition of some of the old coppers that are posted on here. Lucky dogs:-) good to see you were able to get out and hopefully in about 6 weeks I can too(fingers crossed)

Hey Buckaroo,
Great to see another post from you. I was starting to think you and the Gumbo Gang were out filming a new TV show. :tongue3:
Congrats on the great silver finds and Shangalang's LC.
Still waiting to see that Barber quarter soon,
DUHg

Great hunt fellas. The F-75 and Cortes were on a mission. What a combo.
I enjoy your hunts because you always eye ball a lot of the sites associated history and pick it up. The buttons and pipe stems and buttons. Very cool. Mix it together and it tells a good story.
Late in getting to this :tongue3: I missed the memo.

NICE LITTLE HAUL - WTG!!!

Great day Josh. Glad to see your new spot producing sweet shiny keepers...

Beautiful finds, ya'll! The reason for the lack of LC finds....my guess...and it's just a wild moment of a guess..maybe they just didn't need/want them. There was a lot of big money going on there back in the day. I read this today from Robert at Defending the Heritage. I would think it could apply to a broader area than just immediate NO tho....
New Orleans was a prosperous city that to this day has not recovered from the War of Northern Aggression. Most of the goods that passed in and out of Louisiana and the entire Mississippi Valley region came through New Orleans. During most of the antebellum period it was the United States' second leading port, behind only New York City.

In the 1840s New Orleans was the fourth leading commercial port in the world in value of exports, which consistently exceeded imports.

~Robert~

Congrats on ALL those super finds, ya'll!
