Hello All,
Well don't get me wrong. We love digging Spanish silver and Seated coins. But we changed gears big time today! We had heard old timers tell stories of a large site that was in heavy use during the 1940s through the early 60s off in the middle of what are now cane fields. We'd put the information on the back burner for a whole year, not too interested in digging modern coins. Well, we decided to give the place a shot today since we'd had permission for the field for well over a year now. It turned out to be a fun hunt. 25 coins were recovered by Shanegalang, DiggerGirl, and I in one short hunt at the new site today. While none of them were old, they ranged in age from 1918 through 1961. As usual, a couple of older relics were found including a GREAT complete barrel tap that DG dug, most of a brass stirrup for Shanegalang, and a nice late 1800s baggage check tag from the Texas & Pacific Railway for me!
Things started out slow, then the wheat cents started turning up. I kept thinking there should be a silver in there somewhere, and sure enough DiggerGirl pulled out a shiny 1961 Silver Washington. I scored next with a signal that read 91 on my F75. Out flopped a WALKER HALF DOLLAR out of the hole! She took two steps and dug a silver "war nickel" and a charm from a bracelet. Then she got the barrel tap and I scored a silver Washington myself. All the while we were digging wheaties, 1940s and 50s Jefferson nickels, and a couple Buffaloes (recovered by DG). Then Shanegalang got what he was wanting: a Mercury Dime! His NEWEST silver dime was an early 1900s Barber since he began detecting. Nice to fill in those holes in the collection. Next time at this site we'll get you a silver Roosie, Shane! Maybe I'll have a shot at that well-worn Barber Quarter I can never seem to dig...
At any rate, it was a great hunt, with a nice handful of coins and some decent relics to show at the end. And of course, there's more to come from this site. I think we'll find hotspots over a large area, so I hope there will be some fun times after some Not-So-Old silver in the future. After all the Spanish and Seateds it's fun to dig a lot of coins that are "just old enough."
Hope y'all enjoy the video and the photos:
Happy Hunting,
Buck
