Hello All,

Well don't get me wrong. We love digging Spanish silver and Seated coins. But we changed gears big time today! We had heard old timers tell stories of a large site that was in heavy use during the 1940s through the early 60s off in the middle of what are now cane fields. We'd put the information on the back burner for a whole year, not too interested in digging modern coins. Well, we decided to give the place a shot today since we'd had permission for the field for well over a year now. It turned out to be a fun hunt. 25 coins were recovered by Shanegalang, DiggerGirl, and I in one short hunt at the new site today. While none of them were old, they ranged in age from 1918 through 1961. As usual, a couple of older relics were found including a GREAT complete barrel tap that DG dug, most of a brass stirrup for Shanegalang, and a nice late 1800s baggage check tag from the Texas & Pacific Railway for me!

Things started out slow, then the wheat cents started turning up. I kept thinking there should be a silver in there somewhere, and sure enough DiggerGirl pulled out a shiny 1961 Silver Washington. I scored next with a signal that read 91 on my F75. Out flopped a WALKER HALF DOLLAR out of the hole! She took two steps and dug a silver "war nickel" and a charm from a bracelet. Then she got the barrel tap and I scored a silver Washington myself. All the while we were digging wheaties, 1940s and 50s Jefferson nickels, and a couple Buffaloes (recovered by DG). Then Shanegalang got what he was wanting: a Mercury Dime! His NEWEST silver dime was an early 1900s Barber since he began detecting. Nice to fill in those holes in the collection. Next time at this site we'll get you a silver Roosie, Shane! Maybe I'll have a shot at that well-worn Barber Quarter I can never seem to dig...

At any rate, it was a great hunt, with a nice handful of coins and some decent relics to show at the end. And of course, there's more to come from this site. I think we'll find hotspots over a large area, so I hope there will be some fun times after some Not-So-Old silver in the future. After all the Spanish and Seateds it's fun to dig a lot of coins that are "just old enough." :D

Hope y'all enjoy the video and the photos:

Seems to be a great site!

Welcome to my world BB. I hardly ever find OLD coins like you all normally do. That's an awesome hunt you three had. Congrats on the Walker half and Shangalangs first Merc. :hello2: I wish had his problems. :laughing7:
That cane field looks huge. I would be out there every day.
Thanks for the video. Good luck on the Barber quarter. This may be your lucky spot. If if find two send me one. :tongue3:

Good hunt you guys. I'd still rather hunt that kinda hunt than a tot lot. No offense to those that hunt tot lots, but once you get your first old silver or copper, you can never turn back. Congrats on the silver count!

Yeah, we had to solve that problem. Couldn't let him be special any longer since my first silver was a Merc and his was a 1700s Spanish. Silver spoon in someone's mouth HAHA! At any rate, My 2nd Barber Quarter is going to you, unless you dig a REAL one before I do! Or maybe I'll save the postage and hand it to you in person at the Who's Who of digging...I mean, Buckleboy Wedding. :D

I can never turn back either...but it's funny, I'd almost forgotten what a Mercury Dime looked like. This was really refreshing today.

Still a good day.

sweet silvers. I'd take that any day (because it would beat most any other day I ever have)

Nice spot, wish I could find a site like that here in South Jersey. They might not be reales, but I know myself and others would give there left:censored:to hunt a spot like that. They are great finds, I found a baggage tag like that this past summer. Just above the cutout/belt attachment you will see the manufacturer. Here is a link to find more info/value. Some of these tags are supposedly valuable, of course condition, just like coins plays a big part. Still interesting.

The maker is W.Wilcox from Chicago. 1880s. We'll likely toy around with this site as long as it's producing quantity, then move on and put it on the back burner.

Hey you guys even kill it on young silver! Congrats to all three for pulling out silver! A Walker is hard to come by, maybe not as hard as Spanish silver, but still a beautiful coin. Congrats! :icon_thumright:

Any half dollar is a reason to celebrate, IMO. It took me 13 years of digging to find my first 3 half dollars (Seated, Barber, Walker,)... then I got 1 in the 5 years I dug in KY (Seated). Now I've dug FOUR in the past 24 months down here. (Walker, Franklin, Seated, Walker). Seems like either this is a really good location to dig half dollars, or I've been on a bit of a streak lately. I was thrilled to dig the Franklin in 2012 here. Never had dug one of those before.

Best Wishes,

Buck

I agree, how does that song go "should of put a ring on it" ? Looks like a keeper to me, easy on the eyes, and metal detects, how could you ask for more?

It's always fun to dig silver even if it is newer. Looks like you all had a great time.
